Chapter 14: The Final Recording
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Grandfather looked at the screen.
Then at the necklace.
Then at me.
And suddenly, I understood.
He wasn’t afraid of the first file.
He was afraid of what came next.
Dad grabbed his phone.
“Can we access the second file?””
Michael shook his head.
“Not without the password.””
Grandfather smiled slightly.
“A password your father created.””
Dad looked at me.
My father.
The man I never met.
I looked at the screen.
The last thing my mother said.
“You were loved every single day.””
I closed my eyes.
Then I remembered something.
A memory.
Not mine.
Dad had told me about it years ago.
My mother used to sing the same song every night.
A song I still hummed when I couldn’t sleep.
I walked toward the computer.
“Ethan?””
Dad followed.
“I think I know.””
I entered the song title.
Nothing.
Wrong.
I thought again.
Then I remembered the necklace.
My mother had touched it whenever she sang.
Not the song.
The words.
I typed:
“Loved every day.””
The screen unlocked.
Everyone gasped.
A second file appeared.
Dad clicked it.
The video started.
This time, my father appeared.
My real father.
He looked nervous.
But determined.
“If you are watching this, then something happened.””
He looked directly at the camera.
“David, I’m sorry.””
Dad covered his mouth.
My father continued.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
The video shook slightly.
“I discovered that my brother Michael was being pressured by your father.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Grandfather stared at the screen.
My father continued:
“But Michael was not the one who wanted us gone.””
Everyone went silent.
“Your father was.””
Dad looked at Grandfather.
The older man’s face lost all color.
“He believed Ethan would destroy your future.””
My father’s voice became emotional.
“He believed an adopted child would make you weak.””
Dad’s eyes filled with tears.
“But he was wrong.””
A pause.
“Ethan was the strongest thing that ever happened to our family.””
I couldn’t hold back.
I cried.
My father continued.
“Michael helped us escape.””
Michael looked down.
“But someone betrayed our location.””
The video showed a document.
A signature.
A name.
Dad leaned closer.
Then he whispered:
“No.””
Because the signature belonged to Amanda.
Everyone looked at her.
She collapsed into the chair.
“No.””
Dad stepped back.
“You signed it.””
Amanda cried.
“I didn’t know what it was.””
The video continued.
“She thought she was helping.””
My father’s voice changed.
“She was manipulated.””
Everyone froze.
Amanda looked up.
“What?””
My father continued:
“The person controlling everything was not Amanda.””
The screen showed another document.
Another signature.
Grandfather’s name.
Dad stared.
The truth was finally complete.
Grandfather had used everyone.
Michael.
Amanda.
Even his own son.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Grandfather suddenly turned toward the door.
Dad blocked him.
“It’s over.””
Grandfather laughed.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It isn’t.””
I stepped back.
“What?””
He pointed at the necklace.
“You still don’t know the final secret.””
Dad frowned.
“There’s more?””
Grandfather smiled.
“The third file.””
Michael looked shocked.
“There were only two.””
Grandfather shook his head.
“Your father always planned ahead.””
He looked at me.
“The third file was never stored anywhere.””
My heart raced.
“Where is it?””
Grandfather smiled.
“You.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
“The final message was hidden in Ethan.””
Dad immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.””
But Grandfather continued.
“Your parents knew if anyone found the files, they would destroy them.””
He looked at the necklace.
“So they left the final proof somewhere nobody would search.””
My hand moved toward the necklace.
A strange feeling came over me.
Because suddenly…
I remembered something.
Something from when I was little.
My mother holding me.
Whispering:
“Ethan, when you’re ready, you’ll know.””
Dad looked at me.
“Ethan?””
I touched the necklace.
And felt something underneath it.
Something I had never noticed before.
A tiny engraving.
Four words.
I read them aloud.
“Open when you remember.””
Everyone went silent.
Then the necklace clicked.
And a hidden compartment opened.
Inside was one final piece of paper.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first line read:
*Ethan, if you found this, then you finally know the truth.*
And underneath…
Was a sentence that changed everything.
*Your father David is not the only person who saved you.*
I looked at Dad.
Confused.
May you like
Then I read the final words.
*Your biological family is still alive.*
