Chapter 3: The Hidden Recording

That night, I didn’t sleep.

The house felt different.

Every sound seemed louder.

The refrigerator humming downstairs.

The pipes shaking in the walls.

Amanda’s footsteps moving from room to room.

Lily slept beside me because she refused to go back to her bedroom.

“She’s acting scary,” she whispered.

I stared at the ceiling.

“She wasn’t always like this.””

Before Dad married Amanda, our house felt warm.

There were movie nights.

Pancake mornings.

Music playing while Dad cooked.

Then Amanda moved in.

At first, she was nice.

She bought Lily new dresses.

She brought me school supplies.

She smiled whenever Dad was watching.

But little by little, things changed.

The smiles disappeared when Dad left the room.

The rules became different for me.

And now I finally understood.

Maybe Dad had noticed too.

Around midnight, I heard the front door open.

I sat up.

Lily woke immediately.

“Ethan?””

“Stay here.””

“No.””

She grabbed my sleeve.

“I’m coming.””

We slowly walked into the hallway.

Downstairs, Amanda was talking.

Another voice answered.

A man.

Not Dad.

I moved closer to the stairs.

“I told you,” Amanda said.

“The boy has the device.””

The man sighed.

“Then find it.””

My heart raced.

Lily covered her mouth.

Amanda continued.

“I thought I could handle him.””

“Handle him?””

“He’s just a child.””

The man’s voice became colder.

“You’re the one who said David would never find out.””

I felt sick.

David.

Dad.

Again.

“What did you do?”” the man asked.

Amanda didn’t answer.

That silence scared me more than anything.

Then the man spoke.

“You need to make sure that recording disappears.””

I stepped backward.

My foot hit the hallway table.

A small picture frame fell.

Crash.

The voices stopped.

Amanda looked up.

“Who’s there?””

Lily grabbed my hand.

We ran.

We barely made it back into my room before Amanda reached the hallway.

She opened our door.

Her eyes moved between us.

“What are you doing awake?””

Lily crossed her arms.

“We heard you.””

Amanda’s expression changed.

“Children imagine things.””

“No,” Lily said.

“We heard you say Dad.””

Amanda stared at her.

Then she looked at me.

“You really want to know what happened to your father?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Amanda stepped inside.

For a moment, she looked tired.

Almost sad.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father left because he wanted space.””

“That’s not true,” I said.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you know everything?””

“No.””

I pointed downstairs.

“But I know you’re scared of that recording.””

Amanda became silent.

That was my answer.

The next morning, something strange happened.

Dad called.

Amanda answered before we could reach the phone.

She walked into the kitchen and closed the door.

But this time, she forgot something.

The device.

It was still hidden in my backpack.

Still recording.

Lily and I sat on the stairs, listening.

Amanda’s voice shook.

“David, I can explain.””

A long silence.

Then Dad’s voice came through the speaker.

“Explain what, Amanda?””

I froze.

Dad sounded angry.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Angry.

Amanda lowered her voice.

“Where are you?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“David—”

“It does matter that my son heard you tell Lily he wasn’t her brother.””

My eyes filled with tears.

Dad knew.

He knew everything.

Amanda went quiet.

Then Dad said something that changed everything.

“I heard the recording, Amanda.””

Lily grabbed my hand.

Amanda whispered:

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice became colder.

“Because Ethan didn’t just record lunch yesterday.””

The kitchen went silent.

My breathing stopped.

Lily looked at me.

“What else did he record?””

Then Dad said:

“The conversation you had with my brother three months ago.””

Amanda dropped the phone.

May you like

And from downstairs, we heard her scream:

“No. He wasn’t supposed to know that.””
