Chapter 11: The Box Under the Floor
Dad didn’t touch the box.
Neither did anyone else.
It sat near the doorway like a threat.
Like something dangerous could crawl out if we opened it.
Grandfather looked impatient.
“You wanted answers.””
Dad stared at him.
“Not from you.””
“Then from whom?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
There was no one else left.
Dad slowly walked forward.
I followed him.
He looked back.
“Ethan.””
“I want to know.””
Dad studied my face.
Then nodded.
Together, we opened the box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a small silver necklace.
My breath stopped.
I knew that necklace.
Not because I had seen it before.
Because I had a matching piece.
Dad noticed.
“Where did you get that?””
I touched the necklace I always wore under my shirt.
“My mom gave it to me.””
Everyone became silent.
Grandfather looked at me.
“Your mother kept half.””
I held it tightly.
“Why?””
“Because it was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Grandfather didn’t answer.
Dad pulled out the documents.
The first page was covered in names.
Company names.
Dates.
Signatures.
He read quietly.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Michael stepped closer.
“What?””
Dad looked at him.
“These are financial records.””
Grandfather smiled.
“Finally.””
Dad looked up.
“What did you do?””
Grandfather sat down calmly.
“I protected the family.””
Nobody moved.
“You destroyed people.””
“I made difficult choices.””
Dad shook his head.
“You always called cruelty a difficult choice.””
Grandfather ignored him.
“Ethan’s parents discovered the company was hiding illegal activity.””
My stomach tightened.
“What company?””
Dad looked at me.
“The company my father owned.””
Grandfather continued.
“They wanted to expose everything.””
Michael looked sick.
“So you tried to silence them.””
Grandfather’s eyes narrowed.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Michael stepped forward.
“For once, I’m done being afraid.””
Grandfather looked at him.
“You should be.””
Michael laughed sadly.
“You already ruined my life.””
Then he pointed at the box.
“But you didn’t ruin Ethan’s.””
Dad looked at the documents again.
Then he found something.
A page hidden at the bottom.
His hands started shaking.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
He turned it around.
It was a letter.
Written by my mother.
Dad read it silently.
Then tears filled his eyes.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“She knew.””
“About what?””
“About you.””
I didn’t understand.
Dad handed me the letter.
My hands shook as I read.
If anything happens to us, Ethan needs to know one thing.
He was loved before he ever met David.
I stopped.
The next line blurred.
The people trying to take him away will say he was unwanted.
They will say he was a mistake.
Don’t let him believe them.
I looked up.
Dad was crying.
Lily hugged me.
I kept reading.
Ethan was the best thing that ever happened to us.
My chest hurt.
Because for the first time, I wasn’t just hearing that I was loved.
I was seeing proof.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my hands went cold.
David, if you are reading this, there is one more thing you need to know.
The person who helped us hide Ethan before the accident was someone inside your family.
I looked at Dad.
He looked confused.
“What?””
The letter continued.
Someone who wanted to save our son.
Dad turned toward Michael.
Everyone did.
Michael looked shocked.
“No.””
Grandfather stood.
“Enough.””
But Michael wasn’t looking at him.
He was looking at the letter.
Then he whispered:
“I know who it was.””
Dad stared.
“Who?””
Michael swallowed.
“The person who saved Ethan.””
A long pause.
Then he looked at Amanda.
May you like
And said:
“It was you.””
