Chapter 4: The Secret Dad Kept

I didn’t understand what Dad meant.

Not completely.

I was seven years old. I knew Amanda was lying. I knew she had been treating me differently. I knew something terrible had happened.

But I didn’t know what could be worse than hearing someone say I wasn’t Lily’s real brother.

Then I heard Amanda whisper from downstairs.

“David, please.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

Lily and I stayed frozen on the stairs.

Dad’s voice came through the phone.

“I want the truth.””

Amanda took a shaky breath.

“There’s nothing to explain.””

“Then why did you panic when you saw Ethan’s recorder?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that tells you someone has been caught.

I looked at Lily.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us moved.

Then Dad spoke again.

“Where is my brother?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

My stomach tightened.

His brother?

Uncle Michael?

I had only met him a few times.

He was always nice to me.

He brought Lily candy and gave me old baseball cards.

But why was Amanda talking to him?

“David,” Amanda said quietly, “you’re misunderstanding.””

“No, Amanda. I’m finally understanding.””

The anger in his voice made the kitchen feel colder.

“I trusted you with my children.””

Amanda started crying.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

Dad’s voice cracked.

“You took food away from Ethan. You told Lily her brother wasn’t her brother. You tried to turn my children against each other.””

“I was stressed.””

“No.””

A pause.

“You were hiding something.””

Lily squeezed my hand.

I could feel her shaking.

Then Amanda said something that made both of us stop breathing.

“Ethan wasn’t supposed to hear that conversation.””

My eyes widened.

What conversation?

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was quieter.

“What did you tell Michael?””

Amanda whispered:

“The truth.””

I leaned forward.

My heart was pounding.

“What truth?”” Dad asked.

Amanda cried harder.

“The truth about Ethan.””

I felt Lily’s fingers tighten around mine.

Dad’s voice changed.

“Don’t say his name like that.””

“David—”

“No.””

A long pause.

“Ethan is my son.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already knew.

Even though Dad had said it a thousand times.

Hearing him defend me felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket after standing in the cold.

Lily smiled through her tears.

Dad continued.

“You knew that when you married me.””

Amanda didn’t speak.

“Say it.””

“David…”

“Say it, Amanda.””

Her voice became barely audible.

“I knew.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she had known all along.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t mistaken.

She chose to hurt me.

Dad took a deep breath.

“Why?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

“Why would you do that to a child?””

Finally, she said:

“Because everything changed after you adopted him.””

I frowned.

Adopted?

I had never heard that word before.

Lily looked confused too.

Dad immediately responded.

“You promised me you would never use that against him.””

“I didn’t think it would matter.””

“He was seven years old.””

“I was jealous!””

The word echoed through the kitchen.

Lily covered her mouth.

Amanda continued.

“I watched you love him. I watched you spend every weekend teaching him baseball. I watched you put his drawings on the fridge.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I wondered where Lily fit.””

I felt confused.

Because Lily was her daughter.

She had everything.

A mother.

A father.

A home.

Why did she hate me?

Dad answered softly.

“Lily never stopped having a place.””

“I know.””

“Then why punish Ethan?””

Amanda said nothing.

The call went quiet.

Then Dad spoke.

“I’m coming home.””

My heart jumped.

“David—”

“I’m coming home today.””

“You can’t.””

“I can.””

Another pause.

“And this time, Ethan will hear everything.””

The call ended.

Lily and I slowly stepped away from the stairs.

Neither of us spoke.

Then she looked at me.

“Dad adopted you?””

I nodded.

“I guess.””

“Why didn’t he tell us?””

I didn’t know.

But suddenly, I realized something.

Dad had hidden one part of my story.

And Amanda had hidden another.

The question was…

Why had they both been afraid to tell me?
