Chapter 9: They Weren't Just Trying to Take My Daughter
I thought losing custody of Lily was the worst thing Mark could do to me.
I was wrong.
He had also been planning to take my home.
The house where Lily had learned to walk.
The kitchen where we baked cookies together.
The bedroom where I had sat beside her during thunderstorms.
The home I had spent seven years helping pay for.
And apparently, my husband had found a way to turn it into another part of his scheme.
"Vanessa, send everything to Rebecca," I said.
"I will.""
"Don't contact Mark about this.""
"I won't.""
She paused.
"Chloe?""
"Yes?""
"I'm sorry.""
I ended the call.
Zoe was already standing.
"Tell me she didn't just say what I think she said.""
I nodded.
"There's an agreement involving the house.""
Rebecca immediately requested that Vanessa send the document directly to her secure email.
Twenty minutes later, it arrived.
The agreement was six pages long.
The first page described a proposed arrangement involving temporary guardianship of Lily.
The second outlined financial responsibilities.
The third contained a section titled:
*Residential Property Transfer Following Custody Resolution.*
I read it slowly.
Mark had proposed transferring my interest in our marital home to an entity controlled by Megan.
The arrangement was supposedly intended to provide stability for Lily.
But there was another paragraph.
If I voluntarily signed the property transfer, Megan would agree to support Mark's custody petition.
If I refused, the agreement stated that Megan could withdraw her cooperation and provide testimony against me.
I looked at Rebecca.
"They were going to use Lily to get my house?""
Rebecca nodded.
"That's what this document appears to suggest.""
I felt sick.
"Could they actually do this?""
"Not simply through this agreement. Your ownership rights and the applicable property laws would matter. But the document is concerning, especially because it suggests they intended to pressure you into signing.""
I examined the signature page.
Mark had signed it.
Megan had signed it.
There was a blank line for my signature.
Then I noticed the date.
February 18.
The same month as the first recording.
They had been planning this for nine months.
Rebecca made copies.
"This is important evidence. Don't sign anything they send you. We'll need to examine the title records and any documents filed concerning your property.""
I looked at Zoe.
"Can you believe this?""
She shook her head.
"They didn't just betray you. They turned your daughter into a bargaining chip.""
The next morning, I went to the house with Rebecca's guidance to retrieve some belongings.
Mark wasn't supposed to be there.
But when I opened the front door, I heard his voice from the kitchen.
"You're early.""
He was standing beside the counter wearing a white shirt and dark trousers.
A cup of coffee sat in front of him.
He looked perfectly ordinary.
That was what frightened me.
How could someone plan to destroy his family and still stand in the kitchen discussing coffee?
I kept my voice calm.
"I'm here for Lily's things.""
"Where is she?""
"Safe.""
"She's my daughter too.""
"Then you should have acted like her father.""
His jaw tightened.
"Don't start.""
I walked toward the hallway.
He followed.
"Chloe, we need to settle this.""
"No. We need attorneys.""
He laughed.
"You're making a mistake.""
I turned.
"What mistake?""
"Listening to Zoe. She's always hated my family.""
I almost smiled.
"Zoe didn't transfer Lily's savings to Megan.""
Mark's expression changed.
"That was a temporary arrangement.""
"You keep using that word.""
"Because it's true.""
"What about the house?""
He froze.
I watched the color drain from his face.
"What house?""
I pulled out my phone and showed him the agreement.
He stared at the document.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he reached for my phone.
I stepped backward.
"Don't.""
His voice became low.
"Where did you get this?""
"Does it matter?""
"That's a private agreement.""
"An agreement to take my home?""
"Our home.""
"Not according to the document you signed.""
He ran a hand through his hair.
"Listen, Megan was supposed to handle the paperwork. I didn't think she'd actually use it.""
I stared at him.
"You signed it.""
"Because she said it was necessary.""
"Necessary for what?""
He looked away.
I stepped closer.
"Mark, did you promise Megan my house in exchange for helping you take Lily?""
He said nothing.
And somehow, his silence was worse than an admission.
Then he finally spoke.
"I needed to protect my future.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"From your wife and daughter?""
"You don't understand what I've been dealing with.""
"Then explain it.""
He looked toward the window.
"I have debts. Serious debts. My business is in trouble. Megan offered to help.""
"With my daughter's money?""
"With everything.""
I shook my head.
"You stole from Lily.""
"I was going to replace it.""
"When?""
"When things stabilized!""
I stared at him.
"Did you plan to move Lily to Indianapolis?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped back.
"You're unbelievable.""
Mark suddenly grabbed the folder from my hand.
"Give me that.""
I pulled it away.
"Don't touch me.""
His voice rose.
"You're going to ruin everything!""
I looked directly at him.
"No, Mark. You did that yourself.""
He stood motionless.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
I saw the name before he turned it away.
*MEGAN.*
He answered.
"What?""
Her voice was loud enough for me to hear.
"Did you get the documents?""
Mark glanced at me.
"Not yet.""
"Then get her to sign them!""
"I'm handling it.""
Megan shouted, "You told me the house would be mine!""
Mark closed his eyes.
"Not now.""
She continued.
"If Chloe has those papers, we're finished. Mother is already talking to the lawyer.""
I watched him.
Then Megan said something that made my blood run cold.
"Mark, if you don't fix this, I'll tell Chloe what happened to her father.""
He went completely still.
His phone lowered slightly.
I stared at him.
"What did she mean?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"What happened to my father?""
Mark's face had turned pale.
"Chloe, don't listen to her.""
I felt my pulse pounding in my ears.
"My father has been dead for six years. What does Megan know about him?""
Mark looked toward the front door.
Then he whispered:
"There's a reason your father left you that money, Chloe.""
I froze.
"What money?""
He swallowed.
"The inheritance you never received.""
I couldn't breathe.
My father had died believing that his estate had been settled.
At least, that was what Mark had told me.
I remembered signing documents after the funeral. I remembered Mark handling the paperwork because I couldn't bear to deal with it.
I remembered trusting him.
"How much?"" I whispered.
Mark looked down.
"Almost three hundred thousand dollars.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Three hundred thousand.
And suddenly, the missing college savings, the stolen house, the custody petition, and Megan's strange obsession with Lily began connecting in ways I couldn't yet understand.
I took one step backward.
"Where is my inheritance, Mark?""
He opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, the front door swung open.
Megan walked inside.
She looked directly at me.
Then she said:
"Your father didn't leave you that money, Chloe. He left it to Lily.""
My knees nearly buckled.
Megan placed a thick folder on the kitchen counter.
"And if you want to know why your husband was so desperate to get custody, you should read what's inside.""
She opened the folder.
The first page contained my father's signature.
May you like
The second contained Lily's name.
And the third revealed who would inherit everything if my daughter was legally declared unable to live with me.
