Chapter 3: My Daughter Knew the Secret Before I Did
I watched the recording again.
Then again.
Each time, I noticed something different.
Lily wasn't simply afraid of Megan.
She was afraid of what Megan might make her say.
The little girl on the screen was holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest. Her hair was tied into two uneven ponytails.
I recognized the pajamas.
I had bought them for her birthday.
The recording was dated October 12.
Almost six weeks before Thanksgiving.
"Pause it," I whispered.
Zoe stopped the video.
I pointed at the hallway.
"Where was this camera?""
"Near Patricia's kitchen. It covers the back entrance.""
"Why was Lily there?""
Zoe looked uncomfortable.
"Mark had taken her to Patricia's house that afternoon. You were working.""
I remembered that day.
Mark had told me he was taking Lily to visit his mother because Patricia missed her granddaughter.
I had thanked him.
I had actually thanked him.
"Play the rest.""
Zoe pressed the space bar.
On the screen, Megan crouched in front of Lily.
"Listen carefully. Your daddy is going to have a new house soon.""
Lily shook her head.
"I like our house.""
"Your daddy might need to move.""
"Will Mommy come?""
Megan sighed dramatically.
"That's complicated.""
Lily's voice became smaller.
"Can Mommy come with us?""
Megan shook her head.
"Your mommy makes Daddy unhappy. You don't want Daddy to be unhappy, do you?""
Lily looked down at her rabbit.
"No.""
"Then you need to be a good girl.""
"I am a good girl.""
"Then don't tell your mommy about the papers.""
Lily nodded.
Megan stood up and walked away.
But before leaving the frame, she turned around.
"And if Mommy asks, you didn't hear anything.""
The video ended.
I couldn't speak.
My daughter had been carrying this secret for weeks.
A five-year-old child had been made to believe that protecting her father meant lying to her mother.
I opened the back door and gently climbed into the rear seat.
"Lily?""
She stirred.
"Mommy?""
I brushed the hair away from her forehead.
"Sweetheart, can I ask you something?""
She rubbed her eyes.
"Are you mad?""
My heart broke.
"No. Never.""
I showed her the stuffed rabbit lying beside her.
"Do you remember visiting Grandma's house with Daddy last month?""
She nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Did Aunt Megan say anything that made you feel scared?""
Lily stared at her blanket.
For a moment, I thought she wouldn't answer.
Then she whispered, "She said Daddy was going to take me away.""
I felt tears run down my cheeks.
"Did Daddy say that?""
Lily nodded.
"He said Mommy gets angry too much and that I would have to live with Aunt Megan.""
I swallowed.
"Did he tell you not to tell me?""
She nodded again.
"Why didn't you tell Mommy?""
Her little lip trembled.
"Because Aunt Megan said Daddy would be sad. And I don't want Daddy to be sad.""
I pulled her against my chest.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
She began crying.
"Mommy, I don't want to leave you.""
"You won't have to explain anything to anyone tonight. You're safe with me.""
"But Daddy said I might have to choose.""
I closed my eyes.
"No one should ever make you choose between your parents.""
Zoe stood outside the car, crying silently.
When I finally climbed back into the driver's seat, she handed me a tissue.
"We need to speak to a lawyer.""
I nodded.
"Tomorrow morning.""
"Tonight, we make copies of everything.""
We spent the next hour transferring the videos, preserving the original files, and writing down every detail we could remember.
Zoe had also saved several text messages from Megan.
One caught my attention.
*MEGAN: The Thanksgiving incident needs to happen before the custody hearing. Patricia says the witnesses are already arranged.*
Another message came from Mark.
*MARK: Chloe must lose control in front of everyone. Otherwise, the judge won't believe the petition.*
I read the messages until the words blurred.
Then my phone rang.
Mark.
This time, I answered.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
"With Lily.""
"Bring her home.""
"No.""
A pause.
"What do you mean, no?""
"I mean Lily and I aren't coming back tonight.""
He exhaled sharply.
"Chloe, stop acting like a victim. You assaulted my sister.""
"Your sister slapped our daughter.""
"She was correcting her behavior!""
I gripped the phone.
"She's five, Mark.""
"Don't start that again.""
"Why did you sign custody papers?""
Silence.
Then he said, "What papers?""
I almost laughed.
"Don't insult my intelligence.""
His voice changed.
"Who told you?""
I looked at Zoe.
"Does it matter?""
"Was it Zoe?""
I didn't answer.
Mark began speaking faster.
"Listen to me. Those documents were just a precaution. Megan is going through a difficult time, and she loves Lily. We thought it would be good for her to have more responsibility.""
"More responsibility? You signed away custody of your daughter to your sister?""
"That's not what it means.""
"Then explain the recording.""
Silence.
A long, terrible silence.
Finally, Mark spoke.
"You shouldn't have that recording.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Because it was private.""
I stared at the phone.
Not because he denied it.
Not because he sounded shocked.
But because he knew exactly which recording I meant.
"Mark, did you plan Thanksgiving?""
He lowered his voice.
"Chloe, you need to understand something. You made this much worse than it had to be.""
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me from the back seat, holding her stuffed rabbit.
"Did you know Megan was going to hit our daughter?""
Mark didn't answer.
I repeated the question.
"Did you know?""
He finally said, "It wasn't supposed to happen like that.""
My blood ran cold.
"What wasn't supposed to happen?""
He exhaled.
"She was supposed to frighten Lily a little. You were supposed to react. Nobody expected you to hit her twice.""
I couldn't move.
He had just admitted it.
My husband had known his sister intended to frighten our child.
And he had been counting on me losing control.
"You're disgusting," I whispered.
"Chloe, listen—"
I ended the call.
Zoe immediately reached for my hand.
"Did he admit it?""
I nodded.
She opened her laptop and checked the recording software.
"Please tell me you recorded that call.""
I looked at her.
She gave me a small, determined smile.
"The recording was running the entire time.""
For the first time that night, I felt something other than fear.
Hope.
But before I could say anything, my phone lit up with a new message.
It was from Patricia.
*PATRICIA: If you want to know why Mark agreed to let Megan raise Lily, ask him what happened to the money from your daughter's college account.*
I read it twice.
Then I opened my banking app.
The account I had been depositing money into every month since Lily was born showed a balance of $17.42.
I had believed there was more than $28,000 in it.
And suddenly, I understood that the custody battle might not be the only thing my husband had planned.
May you like
Because someone had stolen my daughter's future.
And I was about to discover exactly who had received the money.
