Chapter 13: The Signature That Was Supposed to Destroy Me

I stared at the document on Rebecca's computer.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature.

My handwriting.

Even the small curve beneath the letter B looked exactly like the way I signed important documents.

But I had never seen that paper before.

"That's not my signature," I whispered.

Rebecca enlarged the attachment.

"Are you absolutely certain?""

"Yes.""

Daniel leaned over the desk.

"This is a fabricated document. Richard's trust explicitly prohibited any informal surrender of parental rights.""

Rebecca read the first paragraph.

"According to this filing, Chloe voluntarily agreed to relinquish her parental responsibilities and authorized Mark to make all decisions concerning Lily's residence, education, and financial interests.""

I shook my head.

"I would never sign that.""

Rebecca looked at the date.

"Tomorrow.""

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible. How can a document dated tomorrow already be filed?""

Rebecca checked the electronic submission record.

"Someone prepared it in advance. The date may be intended to correspond with a scheduled hearing or a future acknowledgment.""

She opened the attachment history.

There was a scanned notary seal.

Then she enlarged the signature.

"Do you recognize this notary?""

I looked closer.

It was a woman named Sandra Mills.

I had met her once.

She worked at a small legal services office near Mark's workplace.

Two years earlier, Mark had asked me to sign a document related to our mortgage.

Sandra had witnessed it.

I remembered her clearly because she had asked whether I understood what I was signing.

Now her name appeared on a document surrendering my parental rights.

"She knows I never signed that.""

Rebecca immediately wrote down the name.

"We'll contact her through the proper channels.""

Then she turned toward Daniel.

"I also want the original trust reviewed immediately. If someone has submitted fraudulent documents to obtain control over a minor's inheritance, we need to move quickly.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll request an emergency suspension of Mark's authority.""

I looked at them both.

"How soon?""

Rebecca answered honestly.

"We can't promise an outcome today. But we can submit the evidence and request urgent judicial review.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Mark.

*MARK: I hope you're happy. You've left me no choice.*

Another followed.

*MARK: Lily deserves stability. The court will understand that.*

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed Lily's bedroom at our house.

Her pink blanket was folded neatly.

Her stuffed rabbit sat on the pillow.

Beneath it, Mark had written:

*Her room is ready when she comes home.*

I felt physically sick.

He was acting as if the decision had already been made.

That afternoon, Rebecca received an email from Vanessa.

It contained a photograph of a document found inside the storage unit.

The document was titled:

*PARENTAL CONSENT AND PROPERTY AUTHORIZATION.*

It contained my forged signature.

But this time, there was something different.

A handwritten note appeared in the margin.

Use the version with the notary stamp. The other one has the wrong date.

The note was signed M.B.

Megan Bennett.

Rebecca studied it.

"Chloe, this is potentially important. We need to preserve the original document and establish where it came from.""

Vanessa had also included photographs of the storage unit.

There were boxes of financial statements, property records, and correspondence between Mark and Megan.

One envelope was labeled:

*RICHARD HAYES — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.*

Daniel stared at it.

"Where did she find this?""

"In a locked filing cabinet," Rebecca replied.

Daniel opened the scanned envelope.

Inside was a letter from my father to his attorney.

It was dated three days before he died.

I am increasingly concerned about Mark's attempts to access Lily's trust.

I have not authorized him to withdraw the principal.

If anything happens to me before the amended instructions are finalized, Daniel must investigate any changes made to the trust after February 1.

I covered my mouth.

Daniel continued reading.

I also request that Chloe be informed of the true financial position of the estate. She has been given incomplete information.

I began crying.

My father had tried to protect us.

He had known something was wrong.

And somehow, Mark had managed to keep me from learning the truth for six years.

Then Daniel noticed a final paragraph.

He read it twice.

"There's something here about a witness.""

"What witness?"" Rebecca asked.

Daniel pointed to the bottom.

"Your father says the attorney who prepared the amended instructions also received a recording.""

I leaned forward.

"What recording?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I don't know.""

He checked the attorney's name.

It was a man named Harold Whitman.

Rebecca immediately searched the legal records.

Harold had retired two years earlier, but his firm was still operating.

A call was placed.

A receptionist confirmed that the firm had retained its archived estate files.

Then, after a brief conversation, she returned with a surprising answer.

Harold had left specific instructions that the sealed estate materials could only be released to Daniel Hayes or Chloe Bennett.

Rebecca arranged an appointment for the following morning.

That evening, I received a call from Megan.

I answered because Rebecca had advised me to preserve any communication.

"What do you want?"" I asked.

Megan sounded unusually calm.

"I think we should stop fighting.""

I almost laughed.

"Now?""

"Yes. We can make an arrangement.""

"What kind of arrangement?""

"You agree to let Lily stay with me temporarily, and I'll withdraw my support for Mark's petition.""

I closed my eyes.

"You want me to hand over my daughter?""

"Just temporarily.""

"No.""

Megan sighed.

"Chloe, you're being unreasonable.""

"You're trying to take my child.""

"She's my niece.""

"She's not yours.""

Megan went silent.

Then she said, "You have no idea how much I've sacrificed.""

I looked toward the living room, where Lily was watching a cartoon with Zoe.

"What have you sacrificed?""

"My marriage. My money. My entire life.""

I felt my anger rising.

"Your life is not my daughter's responsibility.""

Megan's voice became sharp.

"You think you're the only person who deserves a family?""

I didn't answer.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Your father promised me something before he died.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He told me Lily would always have a place with our family.""

"She already has a place with her mother.""

Megan laughed bitterly.

"Your father knew you weren't strong enough to protect her.""

I ended the call.

Rebecca, who had been listening through the speaker, immediately asked me to forward the call details.

Then Zoe appeared in the doorway.

"Chloe?""

I turned.

She was holding Lily's stuffed rabbit.

"She wants to know if Daddy is coming to her school tomorrow.""

I looked at my daughter.

"Why?""

Zoe hesitated.

"Because she says Aunt Megan told her that Daddy is going to pick her up and take her somewhere special.""

My stomach dropped.

I checked my phone.

A message from Mark had just arrived.

*MARK: Tomorrow morning, Lily will be with me. Don't make this difficult.*

I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

"What's happened?""

I looked at the message.

"Mark is threatening to collect Lily from school.""

Rebecca's voice became firm.

"Contact the school administration immediately. Send them the relevant custody information and tell them not to release Lily to anyone except an authorized person under the current arrangements. We'll address the legal filings first thing in the morning.""

I looked at Zoe.

Then I walked to the living room and sat beside my daughter.

"Lily?""

She looked up.

"Yes, Mommy?""

"Nobody is taking you anywhere without talking to me first.""

She climbed into my lap.

"Promise?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Promise.""

But as I held her, I realized something.

Mark had spent nine months planning to take Lily.

Megan had spent nine months preparing to become her guardian.

And my father had spent his final days trying to stop them.

May you like

Tomorrow, I would finally discover what he had left behind.

And whether his last attempt to protect us had succeeded.
