Chapter 12: The Company That Connected Every Lie
I stared at Vanessa's name.
The same woman who had called me.
The same woman who had believed Mark was divorced.
The same woman who had discovered the custody documents in her apartment.
Now she was listed as the majority shareholder of a company connected to my father's estate.
"What's this company?"" I asked.
Daniel turned his laptop toward Rebecca.
"Silver Creek Holdings. Your father invested in it shortly before his death.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"It was supposed to develop commercial properties in the Midwest. Your father contributed capital through a separate investment vehicle.""
"How much?""
Daniel checked the records.
"Initially, $120,000.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was that part of Lily's inheritance?""
"Yes. The investment was included in the trust.""
Rebecca leaned closer.
"Who currently controls the company?""
Daniel opened the corporate filings.
"That's what concerns me.""
The company had undergone several ownership changes.
Mark had become director two years earlier.
Vanessa had acquired a majority interest eight months ago.
Megan had been listed as a financial consultant.
And Patricia had signed a document transferring her interest in another connected entity.
The same names kept appearing.
Mark.
Megan.
Patricia.
Vanessa.
It was as if my husband had built an entire network of people around my daughter's inheritance.
Daniel opened the company's financial statements.
"There are unexplained transfers between Silver Creek and Megan's business.""
Rebecca studied the screen.
"Could the missing trust funds have gone through this company?""
"Some of them, yes.""
I looked at the numbers.
"How much?""
Daniel shook his head.
"We need a full accounting. But there are transactions totaling more than $180,000 that require investigation.""
I felt my stomach turn.
Then Rebecca pointed to a recent filing.
"Wait. What's this?""
It was a notice of a proposed property acquisition.
The address was familiar.
I leaned forward.
It was the address of my house.
I stared at the screen.
"Why is my home listed under this company?""
Daniel examined the document.
"Because Mark appears to have arranged a purchase option through Silver Creek Holdings.""
Rebecca read the details.
"Has this property been transferred?""
"No," Daniel replied.
"But there's a pending application to register a financial interest.""
I felt my hands go cold.
"Can they take my house?""
"Not simply because they filed this document," Rebecca said.
"We need to examine the underlying agreement, your ownership rights, and whether any signature was forged. But this is serious.""
I remembered the blank signature line in the agreement Megan had shown me.
They hadn't just wanted me to sign away my house.
They had apparently been preparing another route.
Rebecca immediately instructed her staff to obtain the complete property records and notify the appropriate parties that the transaction was disputed.
Daniel continued examining the company filings.
Then he stopped.
"Chloe, look at this.""
He opened a document dated three months earlier.
It was an agreement between Silver Creek Holdings and Megan's company.
The stated purpose was to provide financial support for a family relocation.
The amount was $75,000.
The beneficiary was Megan.
But there was a handwritten note at the bottom.
*Relocation subject to successful guardianship arrangement.*
I stared at it.
"She was being paid to take Lily?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"It appears so.""
Rebecca photographed the document.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Hello?""
"Chloe, did you get the documents I sent?""
"Yes. My attorney has them.""
"Good. There's something else I found.""
"What?""
"I went through the storage unit Mark rented under my name. There are boxes of paperwork.""
My heart began pounding.
"What kind of paperwork?""
"Company records. Bank statements. Copies of your father's trust. And a folder with your name on it.""
I looked at Rebecca.
"What's in the folder?""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Photographs, medical documents, and a report from a private investigator.""
I felt sick.
"A private investigator?""
"Yes. He was hired to gather information about you.""
I gripped the phone.
"What kind of information?""
"Your work schedule. Your visits to the doctor. Your conversations with neighbors. Even photographs of you picking Lily up from school.""
My skin crawled.
"Why?""
"I don't know. But the report includes several statements suggesting you were emotionally unstable.""
I looked at Rebecca.
She immediately began writing.
"Vanessa, can you send everything to my attorney?""
"Yes.""
Then Vanessa hesitated.
"Chloe, there's one thing I need to tell you about the company.""
"What?""
"I wasn't the original majority shareholder.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Mark transferred the shares into my name eight months ago. He told me it was for tax reasons.""
My heart sank.
"Did you sign anything?""
"Yes. Several documents. I thought they were ordinary business papers.""
"Did you know Lily's inheritance was involved?""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"I swear I didn't.""
I believed she might be telling the truth.
But I also knew that believing someone wasn't the same as having evidence.
"Vanessa, why did Mark put the shares in your name?""
She took a breath.
"Because he told me he was preparing to leave you. He said he needed to protect some assets before the divorce.""
I closed my eyes.
Then she said something that made everything click.
"Chloe, I think Mark was planning to make me responsible for the missing money.""
Rebecca stopped writing.
"What?""
Vanessa continued.
"All the transfers I found were made through accounts associated with Silver Creek. My name is on the company, but Mark controlled the bank accounts.""
I looked at Daniel.
He slowly nodded.
It made sense.
If the money disappeared, Mark could claim Vanessa had controlled the company.
If the company became insolvent, she could take the blame.
If Lily's inheritance was investigated, he could point toward another woman.
And if I discovered the affair, he could use the custody dispute to keep me occupied.
"Vanessa," I said, "you need to be careful.""
"I know.""
"Does Mark know you've contacted me?""
"No.""
"Don't tell him.""
"I won't.""
She paused.
Then her voice became almost inaudible.
"Chloe, I found something in the investigator's report that I think you should know.""
"What?""
"The report wasn't commissioned to prove that you were unstable.""
I frowned.
"Then why was it commissioned?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Because Mark was trying to establish that you were responsible for your father's death.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
"He wanted to claim that you had pressured your father into changing the will before he died.""
I shook my head.
"That's insane.""
"I know. But there's more.""
She continued.
"The investigator interviewed someone who worked at your father's care facility.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"What did they say?""
Vanessa was crying now.
"They claimed your father had been afraid of Mark during his final weeks.""
I felt the room disappear around me.
My father had been sick.
He had been weak.
But I remembered his last visit.
He had held my hand and told me to protect Lily.
I had thought he was simply worried about the future.
Now I wondered whether he had known something I hadn't.
Vanessa whispered:
"Chloe, the report says your father tried to change the trust again three days before he died.""
I looked at Daniel.
He went completely still.
"Was the change accepted?"" I asked.
"No.""
"Why not?""
Vanessa paused.
Then she gave me the answer that shattered the last piece of my understanding.
"Because someone submitted a medical assessment claiming your father was no longer mentally competent to make financial decisions.""
Daniel stood up so quickly his chair fell backward.
"That's impossible!""
Rebecca looked at him.
"Do you know something?""
Daniel's face had gone white.
He opened his briefcase and pulled out another document.
It was a letter from my father's physician.
Dated three days before his death.
The doctor had written that Richard Hayes was mentally competent and fully understood his financial decisions.
Daniel stared at the signature.
Then he looked at me.
"Chloe, your father wasn't the one who was unable to make decisions.""
He placed the letter on the table.
"Someone forged a medical assessment to stop him from changing the trust.""
I felt tears slide down my face.
"Who?""
Daniel slowly turned the document over.
There was a witness signature.
And beneath it was a name I recognized immediately.
My husband.
Mark Bennett.
Rebecca picked up her phone.
"We need to preserve every document and contact the relevant authorities.""
But before she could make the call, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed completely.
"What do you mean the original trust has been accessed?""
He stood motionless.
"Who requested it?""
Another pause.
Then he looked directly at me.
"Chloe, Mark has just filed an emergency application to become Lily's sole legal guardian.""
My heart stopped.
Daniel lowered the phone.
"And he's attached a document claiming that you voluntarily surrendered your parental rights.""
I stared at him.
Because I had never signed such a document.
But when Rebecca opened the attachment, she discovered something even worse.
May you like
The signature was mine.
And the date was tomorrow.
