Chapter 2: The Recording My Sister Was Never Supposed to Keep
Twenty-three minutes later, Zoe pulled into the parking space beside my car.
She was wearing a gray coat, black boots, and the expression she usually wore when she had discovered something terrible but wasn't sure how to explain it.
She climbed into the passenger seat.
"Where's Lily?""
"She's asleep.""
Zoe looked into the back seat.
My daughter had curled against her pink blanket, exhausted from crying.
Zoe's eyes filled with tears.
"God, Chloe. What did they do to her?""
I swallowed.
"Just show me the recording.""
Zoe opened her laptop.
Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard before a security camera image appeared.
It showed Patricia's dining room.
The timestamp was from three weeks earlier.
Patricia sat at the head of the table, drinking coffee. Megan was scrolling through her phone.
Then Mark entered.
He placed a thick folder on the table.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the folder he had brought home two months earlier and claimed contained insurance documents.
Patricia opened it.
"Did she sign anything yet?"" she asked.
Mark shook his head.
"No. Chloe keeps asking questions.""
Megan laughed.
"She's always been suspicious.""
Patricia leaned closer.
"We need to settle this before the end of the year. I don't want another six months of pretending everything is fine.""
I looked at Zoe.
"What's happening?""
She didn't answer.
On the screen, Mark pulled out several sheets of paper.
"These are the custody documents. My attorney says we have a chance if we can establish that Chloe is emotionally unstable.""
I stopped breathing.
Megan crossed her arms.
"She's not unstable. She's just protective of Lily.""
Mark laughed.
"That's what makes it easy.""
My hands began trembling.
Patricia put down her coffee.
"What exactly are you planning?""
Megan leaned forward.
"Leave that to me. I know how to push her buttons.""
Then Mark said something that made me feel physically sick.
"Just make sure Lily gets upset enough for Chloe to react in front of witnesses.""
I covered my mouth.
Zoe paused the video.
"Chloe...""
"Keep playing.""
The recording continued.
Patricia asked, "And if the judge believes Chloe is too emotional to raise Lily?""
Mark answered without hesitation.
"Temporary custody goes to me. Megan can help with the transition.""
Megan smiled.
"Finally. Some time with my niece without Chloe controlling everything.""
I stared at the screen.
My sister-in-law wanted my daughter.
My husband was helping her get her.
And apparently, they had been planning it for weeks.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Zoe closed her laptop halfway.
"I think you should see the other documents.""
She opened another file.
It was a scanned petition requesting sole custody of Lily.
Mark's signature appeared at the bottom.
But beneath his name was a section identifying the proposed temporary guardian.
Megan Bennett.
I felt as if someone had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart.
"Why would he give his sister custody?""
Zoe hesitated.
"There's something else.""
She enlarged the document.
The petition claimed that I had a history of emotional outbursts, aggressive behavior, and an inability to provide a stable environment for Lily.
One paragraph described an incident at Patricia's house.
It was dated three weeks in the future.
My eyes moved over the words.
The petition described me becoming physically aggressive toward Megan during a family gathering.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
"Zoe...""
"I know.""
"They wrote this before Thanksgiving.""
Zoe nodded.
"They planned to make you look violent.""
I remembered the dining room.
Megan shouting.
The slap.
Mark refusing to defend his daughter.
And my own hands striking Megan twice.
Suddenly, I understood why Patricia hadn't looked surprised when I reacted.
They had been waiting for it.
I felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Zoe lowered her eyes.
"Because I didn't know how much of it was real. I thought maybe they were just discussing possibilities. I wanted something undeniable before I came to you.""
I shook my head.
"That was my daughter sitting there.""
"I know.""
"No, Zoe. You don't understand. They used her.""
My voice broke.
Zoe reached across the console and held my hand.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at the frozen image of Mark on the screen.
He was smiling.
The same smile he used when he told Lily bedtime stories.
The same man who had kissed my forehead that morning and promised to meet us at his mother's house.
I opened my phone.
There were six missed calls from him.
Then a message appeared.
*MARK: Where are you? We need to talk.*
Another followed.
*MARK: You went too far today. Megan is considering pressing charges.*
I stared at the screen.
Zoe leaned over.
"Don't answer him.""
A third message appeared.
*MARK: If you don't apologize tonight, I'll make sure the court hears about what you did.*
I laughed.
It wasn't because anything was funny.
It was because I suddenly realized that my husband wasn't worried about his daughter.
He was worried about his case.
I typed one sentence.
Lily is safe. Don't contact us until you can explain why you planned to take her away from me.
I sent it.
Mark immediately called.
I declined.
He called again.
I declined again.
Then Zoe opened the second video file.
"This is the one Megan asked me to destroy.""
I looked at her.
"What is it?""
She pressed play.
The camera showed a hallway.
Lily appeared on the screen, wearing her yellow pajamas.
She was standing near the kitchen doorway.
Then Megan stepped into view.
"Come here, Lily.""
My daughter's little shoulders dropped.
She looked frightened.
And when she spoke, I felt my entire world collapse.
"Please, Aunt Megan. Don't make me tell Mommy that Daddy said he doesn't want her anymore.""
Zoe covered her mouth.
I leaned toward the laptop.
Megan looked down at Lily.
May you like
Then she said something I would never forget.
"Your daddy doesn't want your mommy to know what he's been doing.""
