Chapter 8: The Other Woman Was Part of Their Plan
I didn't cry when I heard Mark mention another woman.
I didn't scream.
I didn't even ask Rebecca to replay the recording.
I simply sat there, staring at the laptop.
Nine months.
Nine months of smiling at me across the breakfast table.
Nine months of kissing me goodbye before work.
Nine months of telling Lily that Daddy loved her more than anything.
And somewhere inside that same life, he had been building a plan to replace me.
Rebecca finally broke the silence.
"Chloe, I know this is a lot. But we need to focus on what we can verify.""
I nodded.
"Find her.""
"Who?""
"The woman in Indianapolis.""
Rebecca looked at Zoe.
Zoe opened her laptop.
"I can help.""
Within twenty minutes, she had identified several possible connections through publicly available business records and social media.
Then she found something.
A photograph posted by Mark six months earlier.
He was standing beside a blonde woman outside a restaurant.
The caption read:
Some people make life feel like a second chance.
There was no mention of me.
No mention of our marriage.
The woman's name was Vanessa Reed.
I recognized her immediately.
She had once attended a company Christmas party with Mark.
He had introduced her as a new regional consultant.
I remembered asking him about her afterward.
He had laughed.
"She's just someone from work, Chloe.""
I had believed him.
Zoe clicked through Vanessa's public profile.
There were photographs of an apartment in Indianapolis, a small nursery, and a baby boy.
The most recent picture showed Vanessa holding the child.
The caption read:
My little miracle. Eight months of loving you.
I felt my hands go cold.
"Eight months?""
Zoe nodded.
The dates matched the February recording.
Rebecca made a note.
"We shouldn't assume the child is Mark's until we have confirmation. But the timing makes this relevant.""
I stared at the photograph.
"He's been living another life.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Mark.
*MARK: We need to talk about what you heard. Please don't jump to conclusions.*
I didn't respond.
Another message arrived.
*MARK: Vanessa has nothing to do with Lily.*
I looked at Rebecca.
"How does he know I heard that recording?""
Rebecca's expression hardened.
"Someone may have told him.""
We turned toward Patricia.
She was sitting quietly in the corner.
Her face had become pale.
"Did you know about Vanessa?""
Patricia nodded.
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"And you never thought to tell me?""
"I didn't know how serious it was.""
"You knew he had another woman?""
She looked down.
"He told me he was unhappy.""
I laughed.
"That's convenient.""
Patricia wiped her eyes.
"He said your marriage was already ending.""
"Was it?""
She shook her head.
"Not that I knew.""
I stood up.
"Then why did you help him?""
Patricia began crying.
"Because I thought if Lily stayed with family, she would be protected.""
"From whom? Me?""
"No.""
"Then from whom?""
Patricia had no answer.
That afternoon, Rebecca contacted a colleague in Indiana who helped investigate financial and custody-related matters.
By evening, we had discovered that Mark had been transferring money to Vanessa for almost a year.
The payments were listed as consulting expenses.
Several came from the same account that had received transfers from our household savings.
There were also hotel bookings.
Weekend trips.
A lease agreement for an apartment in Indianapolis.
And a payment for a child's medical expenses.
I sat at Zoe's kitchen table, looking at the documents.
"How much?""
Rebecca checked the spreadsheet.
"At least $46,000 in identifiable payments. There may be more.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"That money could have paid for Lily's education.""
Zoe reached across the table.
"Chloe, don't blame yourself.""
"I'm not.""
But I was remembering every time Mark had told me we needed to cut expenses.
Every time he had said we couldn't afford a vacation.
Every time Lily had asked for dance lessons and he had told her perhaps next year.
Meanwhile, he had been funding another household.
At 7:15 p.m., my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Is this Chloe Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Vanessa Reed.""
I sat straighter.
"How did you get my number?""
"Mark gave it to me.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you want?""
"I think we need to talk.""
"About what?""
There was a long pause.
Then she said, "About the fact that Mark told me you were mentally unstable and that you had agreed to let Megan raise Lily.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you believe him?""
"At first.""
"Do you still?""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"Because I found something in his apartment.""
I looked at Zoe.
She had already stopped typing.
"What did you find?""
"Documents. Financial statements. A custody petition. And a photograph of your daughter.""
I felt sick.
"Why do you have those?""
"Because Mark has been using my apartment to store things he doesn't want you to find.""
"What things?""
"Files about the custody case. And something else.""
She lowered her voice.
"I think he was planning to move Lily here after the hearing.""
My chest tightened.
"To Indianapolis?""
"Yes.""
"With you?""
"That's what he told me.""
I couldn't speak.
Vanessa continued.
"He said you were going to lose custody anyway. He said Megan was only supposed to help temporarily, and then he would bring Lily here.""
I looked toward the living room.
Lily was coloring at the coffee table.
She had drawn three people holding hands.
Mommy.
Daddy.
Herself.
I swallowed.
"Vanessa, do you have the documents?""
"Yes.""
"Can you send them to my attorney?""
"I can.""
Then she said something unexpected.
"Chloe, I need you to understand that I didn't know about the plan to take Lily until today.""
I remained silent.
"I thought Mark was divorced in everything but paperwork. He told me you had agreed to separate and that Lily would be living with him.""
My jaw tightened.
"You're telling me you believed he was divorced?""
"Yes.""
She started crying.
"I found your wedding photographs in a box this morning. That's when I realized he had lied about everything.""
I didn't know whether to believe her.
But before I could ask another question, she whispered:
"There's one document you really need to see.""
"What document?""
"A draft agreement between Mark and Megan.""
"What does it say?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she answered.
"It says that Megan would receive permanent guardianship of Lily, and in exchange, she would help Mark obtain something from you.""
"What?""
"Your signature.""
"My signature on what?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Your husband's name is on the agreement. And the document they're trying to get you to sign isn't just about custody.""
My stomach dropped.
May you like
"What is it?""
"Chloe, it's a transfer of ownership for your house.""
