Chapter 4: The Money They Stole From My Daughter
I stared at the banking app until the numbers stopped looking real.
$17.42.
That was all that remained in the college savings account I had opened for Lily when she was born.
For five years, I had deposited money into that account every month. Birthday money from relatives went directly into it. Tax refunds went into it. Even the money I earned from selling handmade decorations online had gone toward Lily's future.
I had skipped buying myself new clothes to make those deposits.
And now there was almost nothing left.
Zoe leaned over the center console.
"How much was supposed to be there?""
"More than twenty-eight thousand.""
Her expression hardened.
"Can Mark access the account?""
I shook my head.
"He's an authorized user. I added him two years ago because he said it would make managing our daughter's finances easier.""
Zoe closed her eyes.
"Chloe...""
"I know.""
I opened the transaction history.
There were multiple withdrawals, each transferred to an account I didn't recognize.
The first was for $4,500.
The second was $7,000.
The third was $8,200.
The final transfer was made just nine days earlier.
$6,000.
All four transactions had been authorized using Mark's credentials.
I took screenshots.
Then I noticed the recipient's name.
*MB Lifestyle Consulting LLC.*
"What's that?"" Zoe asked.
I enlarged the screen.
"I've never heard of it.""
Zoe took out her phone.
"Let me search.""
She typed the name into a business registry website. After a few minutes, her expression changed.
"What?""
She turned her phone toward me.
The company had been registered six months earlier.
Its listed owner was Megan Bennett.
I felt my stomach turn.
"She took Lily's college money?""
"It looks that way.""
I stared at the screen.
Megan had a luxury apartment, designer handbags, expensive jewelry, and a habit of complaining that her brother never helped her enough.
Apparently, he had been helping her.
With our daughter's money.
I called the bank's fraud department.
After verifying my identity, I explained the unauthorized-looking withdrawals and requested an immediate account review.
The representative placed me on hold.
When she returned, her voice was careful.
"Mrs. Bennett, I can confirm that the transfers were made using an authorized account holder's credentials. However, we can open a formal dispute and investigate the destination accounts.""
"Can you freeze the remaining funds?""
"We can restrict further withdrawals while the investigation is pending.""
"Please do that.""
I watched the representative complete the request.
Then I asked for copies of every transaction and the account access history.
When the call ended, Zoe squeezed my shoulder.
"At least we have something concrete.""
I nodded.
But the worst part was still waiting.
I called Mark again.
He answered immediately.
"What now?""
"Where did Lily's college money go?""
Silence.
Then he sighed.
"Chloe, I can explain.""
"Good. Start explaining.""
"Megan needed help with her business.""
I stared through the windshield.
"With my daughter's savings?""
"It was temporary.""
"Twenty-eight thousand dollars is temporary?""
"She was going to pay it back.""
"When?""
"Once her business started making money.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Your sister opened a company six months ago. How much money has she made?""
"That's none of your business.""
"That money belonged to Lily!""
Mark's voice became sharper.
"You're making this sound criminal. I moved money within the family.""
"You transferred our daughter's savings into your sister's company without my permission.""
"I had access.""
"Access isn't ownership, Mark.""
He went quiet.
Then he said something that made my skin crawl.
"Megan needs that money more than Lily does right now.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"She's a grown woman.""
"She's my sister.""
"And Lily is your daughter!""
He lowered his voice.
"Listen, Chloe. If you keep pushing this, you're going to make things very difficult for yourself.""
"Is that a threat?""
"It's advice.""
I ended the call.
Zoe was watching me.
"He's scared.""
"He should be.""
We drove to her apartment because I didn't want Lily waking up in a strange house with police officers or angry relatives outside.
Zoe made hot chocolate for her while I contacted a family attorney she knew through work.
At 11:47 p.m., I received an email from Mark.
The subject line read:
*URGENT — CUSTODY MATTER*
I opened it.
Attached was a letter from his attorney demanding that I return Lily to the marital home immediately.
The letter accused me of alienating my daughter from her father, refusing reasonable communication, and engaging in violent behavior during Thanksgiving dinner.
There was also a photograph.
It showed Megan holding her cheek after I slapped her.
No photograph of Lily.
No mention of the first slap.
No mention of the recordings.
Just Megan's bruised cheek.
Zoe read over my shoulder.
"They're moving fast.""
I looked at the timestamp.
The email had been sent at 11:42 p.m.
Five minutes before the banking investigation call ended.
I scrolled to the final paragraph.
It warned that Mark intended to seek emergency temporary custody if I continued withholding Lily from him.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Megan appeared.
*MEGAN: You should have apologized when you had the chance. Now you're going to lose everything.*
I didn't reply.
Instead, I forwarded the email, the screenshots, the bank statements, and Zoe's recordings to the attorney.
Then I looked toward the bedroom.
Lily was sleeping peacefully.
I whispered to myself, "They are not taking her.""
But just as I put my phone down, another message appeared.
This one was from an unknown number.
*UNKNOWN: Chloe, you need to know that Megan isn't the person Mark is really trying to protect. Check the name on the company registration again.*
I opened the business registry.
May you like
And this time, I noticed the second owner listed beneath Megan's name.
It was Patricia Bennett.
