Chapter 7: The Recording That Exposed Everyone
"Because the recording proves that Lily wasn't the only person they planned to use against you.""
Mark's words stayed in my head long after the call ended.
I stared through the coffee shop window.
He was standing beside the black SUV, speaking to Megan. She had one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding her phone.
Neither looked particularly worried.
They looked irritated.
As if we had interrupted something they considered their property.
Rebecca stepped between me and the window.
"Don't approach them.""
"I'm not afraid of him.""
"This isn't about being afraid. It's about protecting your position. We have evidence now. Let's not give them an opportunity to manufacture another incident.""
She took the USB drive from my hand and placed it inside a small evidence pouch.
"Patricia, I need you to come with us. I also need you to explain exactly how you obtained this recording.""
Patricia nodded.
"I'll tell you everything.""
Before we left, Megan entered the coffee shop.
She walked straight toward our table, carrying a designer handbag.
"Well, isn't this touching?""
Patricia looked down.
Megan pulled out a chair.
"Mother, I thought we agreed you wouldn't get involved.""
Patricia finally raised her eyes.
"I've been involved for too long.""
Megan laughed.
"Don't start pretending you're innocent. You signed the documents too.""
Rebecca stood.
"Ms. Bennett, this conversation is over.""
Megan ignored her.
She looked directly at me.
"Chloe, you really should stop making accusations. You're embarrassing yourself.""
I held her gaze.
"Did you sign my name on a psychological evaluation?""
For the first time, her smile disappeared.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
Megan glanced at Patricia.
"Mother, what have you told her?""
Patricia's voice trembled.
"Everything.""
Megan stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.
"You stupid old woman!""
Several customers turned.
Patricia flinched.
Megan leaned over the table.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?""
Patricia looked at her daughter.
"Yes. I'm finally doing the right thing.""
Megan turned toward me.
"You think you're going to win? You hit me in front of an entire family. Everyone saw it.""
I remained seated.
"Everyone also saw you hit my five-year-old.""
"She was misbehaving.""
"She reached for a piece of turkey.""
Megan rolled her eyes.
"Exactly. You never taught her boundaries.""
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Ms. Bennett, I suggest you leave.""
Megan picked up her handbag.
Then she leaned close enough for me to smell her perfume.
"You should ask your daughter what happened at my apartment.""
My heart stopped.
"What did you do to her?""
Megan smiled again.
"Nothing you can prove.""
She walked out.
I watched her climb into the SUV.
Mark didn't even look at me before driving away.
Rebecca placed a hand on my shoulder.
"We're going to find out exactly what happened.""
Two hours later, we were in Rebecca's office.
A digital forensic specialist she regularly worked with had begun examining the USB drive.
The recording contained three separate audio files and one video.
The first showed Mark and Megan in Patricia's garage.
Megan was pacing beside a stack of cardboard boxes.
"You're making this too complicated," she said.
Mark rubbed his forehead.
"We need the psychologist's report first.""
"She already met Lily.""
"That doesn't mean she'll write what we need.""
Megan laughed.
"She will if she gets paid.""
Mark looked toward the garage door.
"What if Chloe finds out?""
Megan shrugged.
"Then we'll say Chloe approved the appointment. I've already signed her name.""
My stomach tightened.
The specialist paused the recording.
Rebecca looked at me.
"Are you certain you never authorized that evaluation?""
"Absolutely.""
The recording continued.
Megan opened a folder.
"Once we get the report, we can say Chloe's behavior is affecting Lily's emotional development.""
Mark nodded.
"And the Thanksgiving incident?""
Megan smiled.
"That's the easiest part.""
She picked up her phone.
"I've already spoken to two relatives. They'll support whatever we say.""
Mark looked uncomfortable.
"What exactly are you planning?""
Megan lowered her voice.
"Something that makes Chloe look dangerous. Once she reacts, nobody will care what started it.""
Then she laughed.
"And if she tries to fight me, even better.""
The video ended.
Rebecca immediately asked the specialist to preserve the original file and create a verified forensic copy.
I sat motionless.
It was one thing to suspect that Thanksgiving had been engineered.
It was another to hear Megan discussing my daughter's suffering like a business strategy.
Then the specialist opened the second audio file.
A woman's voice filled the room.
It belonged to Dr. Elaine Foster.
"Mr. Bennett, I want to make something clear. I cannot provide a report supporting claims that I haven't independently established.""
Mark answered.
"But you already met my daughter.""
"Yes. For a brief consultation.""
"And you noticed she was anxious?""
"She was anxious because she didn't understand why she was there.""
Megan interrupted.
"We need you to explain that her mother is the cause.""
Dr. Foster sounded offended.
"I will not say that.""
There was a pause.
Then Mark spoke.
"How much would it take?""
The room went silent.
Dr. Foster answered sharply.
"Are you attempting to bribe me?""
The recording stopped.
Rebecca leaned back.
"That's significant. We need to identify this professional and determine whether she has already documented the unauthorized appointment.""
I nodded.
But my attention was fixed on the final audio file.
The specialist opened it.
A few seconds of static played.
Then Mark's voice emerged.
"Megan, this has to work. I'm running out of time.""
Megan answered.
"You promised me Lily.""
"I know what I promised.""
"And the money?""
"After the hearing.""
She laughed.
"You're going to pay me to raise your own daughter?""
Mark sounded angry.
"You're the one who wanted her.""
"Because you told me Chloe was going to leave you!""
Silence.
Then Megan said something that made Rebecca stop typing.
"If you hadn't told me about the woman in Indianapolis, I wouldn't have agreed to any of this.""
I turned toward the laptop.
"What woman?""
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
Mark whispered, "Keep your voice down.""
Megan laughed bitterly.
"Does Chloe know about her?""
"No.""
"Does she know you've already been seeing her?""
"No.""
"And what about the baby?""
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
Rebecca slowly closed her notebook.
"Chloe, I think we need to discuss your husband's personal circumstances separately from the custody matter.""
I stared at the laptop.
My husband had another woman.
Possibly another child.
And somehow, that secret was connected to the plan to take Lily away from me.
But the worst revelation was still waiting.
Because when the specialist opened the file properties, he discovered that the recording had been created on a date that changed everything.
It wasn't from October.
May you like
It was from the previous February.
Mark and Megan had been discussing the plan to take my daughter nearly nine months before Thanksgiving.
