Chapter 9: The Man at the Door
The footsteps outside were slow.
Careful.
Like whoever was walking around the house didn’t want to be heard.
But we heard.
Every step.
Hannah grabbed my arm.
“Back door.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Now.””
The fear in her voice was real.
Not dramatic.
Not fake.
Real.
I moved quickly, one hand on my stomach.
My daughter kicked as if she knew something was wrong.
“I’m not running anymore,” I whispered.
Hannah looked at me.
“What?””
“I spent years believing everyone else’s version of my life.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done.””
The front door handle moved.
Hannah went pale.
“Sarah, please.””
But I didn’t move.
The door opened.
And Cole stepped inside.
For a second, nobody spoke.
He looked at me.
Then at Hannah.
Then back at me.
His face wasn’t angry.
It was exhausted.
“Sarah.””
I felt something break inside me.
“You followed me.””
He swallowed.
“I was worried.””
“Don’t.””
The word came out sharp.
“Do not pretend this is concern.””
Cole stepped forward.
“I know what she’s telling you.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Then you know she’s telling the truth.””
His silence answered.
Hannah moved beside me.
“Tell her.””
Cole looked at her.
“Hannah.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You don’t get to do this again.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Cole closed his eyes.
“Sarah…”
“What happened to Hannah?””
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Cole said:
“She left.””
I laughed.
“She disappeared.””
“She left.””
“Why?””
He looked at Hannah.
Then at me.
“Because she found out things she shouldn’t have.””
I felt cold.
“What things?””
Cole didn’t answer.
Hannah did.
“Your mother.””
My heart sank.
“What about her?””
Hannah stepped forward.
“Darla wasn’t just helping Cole financially.””
I looked at Cole.
“What else?””
Hannah whispered:
“She was helping him find you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Cole’s face changed.
“Sarah, listen to me.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“What does that mean?””
Hannah looked at him.
“You told me you chose Sarah because she was innocent.””
Cole looked down.
“And then you told me you chose her because of her family.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Which one is true?””
Cole said nothing.
That was the answer.
I covered my mouth.
“All these years…”
My voice broke.
“All these years, you were watching me?””
“No.””
“Were you?””
Cole stepped forward.
“I did fall in love with you.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to separate the beginning from the end.””
He stopped.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
Not Cole.
Not my father.
Someone else.
“Sarah, my name is Thomas Reed.””
I frowned.
“Who are you?””
“I was Cole’s business partner.””
Cole’s face went white.
“Hang up.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Thomas continued.
“Because I know what happened to Hannah.””
The room went silent.
Hannah looked terrified.
Thomas spoke again.
“And I know why Cole married you.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Tell me.””
Cole moved toward me.
“Sarah, don’t listen.””
Thomas ignored him.
“The reason Cole chose you wasn’t your family’s money.””
I waited.
“Then why?””
A pause.
Then Thomas said:
“Because Cole knew something about your father.””
My eyes moved to Cole.
“What?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Something that happened before you were born.””
The call cut off.
And Cole whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“Sarah…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face was full of fear.
“Your father wasn’t the victim.””
May you like
I froze.
“He was the reason everything started.””
