Chapter 10: The Lie My Father Buried
I wanted to believe Cole was lying.
I needed him to be.
Because if my father was somehow connected to all of this, then I had nothing left to hold onto.
Not my marriage.
Not my mother.
Not even the man I thought had always protected me.
I looked at Cole.
“You’re telling me my father caused this?””
His face was pale.
“I’m telling you there are things you don’t know.””
“That’s everyone’s favorite excuse.””
I turned toward Hannah.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head slowly.
“No.””
I looked at my father’s number on my phone.
I wanted to call him.
I wanted him to answer and tell me this was another lie.
But a part of me already knew.
Too many people had been hiding the same story.
Cole stepped closer.
“Sarah, please listen.””
I moved away.
“No.””
My voice was quieter now.
“That’s the problem. I listened to everyone.””
I looked at Hannah.
“I listened to my mother.””
Then Cole.
“I listened to you.””
Then I touched my stomach.
“And I almost built my daughter’s life on a lie.””
Cole looked broken.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
The words hung in the room.
Hannah walked toward the table and picked up the old folder.
“There’s something else you need to see.””
Cole immediately reacted.
“No.””
Hannah looked at him.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
She pulled out another document.
This one was older.
The paper was yellowed.
“What is it?””
Hannah handed it to me.
The title caught my attention.
*Whitmore Family Trust Investigation.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Cole looked away.
My stomach tightened.
“Why does your name appear here?””
Hannah answered.
“Because Cole was investigating your family before he met you.””
I stared at the pages.
There were notes.
Dates.
Names.
My father’s name appeared repeatedly.
Daniel Whitmore.
“What was he investigating?””
Hannah swallowed.
“Money.””
I frowned.
“My father had money.””
“That’s not what I mean.””
She pointed to a section.
“Your father was accused of hiding something.””
I read the notes.
My hands began shaking.
*Missing funds. Confidential settlement. Unknown recipient.*
“What is this?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Cole said quietly:
“Your father was involved in a financial scandal.””
I looked at him.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we got married.””
The pain came back.
Like a wave.
“You knew my father had secrets.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my family was vulnerable.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
Cole closed his eyes.
“I thought I could fix things.””
I laughed.
“You thought?””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
*Come home. We need to talk. Alone.*
I showed it to nobody.
Because for once, I didn’t want anyone influencing me.
I drove back to my house with a thousand questions.
When I walked inside, my father was sitting at the kitchen table.
The same table where my mother had confessed.
He looked tired.
Like he knew the moment had arrived.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I placed the documents down.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at them.
Then closed his eyes.
“I hoped you’d never have to know.””
“That’s not your choice.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
He was silent for a long time.
Finally, he said:
“Years ago, I made a mistake.””
I waited.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved toward the documents.
“Cole’s father.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before Cole and I became enemies, we were partners.””
The room went quiet.
“You knew his father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Business.””
I felt dizzy.
Everyone was connected.
Everyone except me.
“What happened?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“We built a company together.””
“And?””
“He betrayed me.””
I stared.
“How?””
“He stole from investors.””
My stomach dropped.
“And you covered it up?””
My father looked hurt.
“I tried to stop him.””
“But did you?””
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
A knock came at the door.
We both froze.
Daniel stood.
“I didn’t invite anyone.””
The door opened before he reached it.
Cole stood there.
My father’s face hardened.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Cole looked at me.
“I need to tell Sarah the truth before someone else twists it.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then start.””
Cole looked at my father.
“Your father didn’t just know my family.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Cole continued:
“He destroyed my father.””
Silence.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
My father didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because for the first time, I wondered if the people who hurt me had all been trying to hide the same thing.
