Chapter 7: The Woman Who Vanished

I stared at the address on my phone for almost five minutes.

The message was still there.

*Come alone if you want the truth about your husband.*

Every part of me knew it was a bad idea.

A pregnant woman meeting a stranger alone after discovering her husband had a hidden past sounded like the beginning of a story where everything went wrong.

But I was already living inside that story.

I looked across the kitchen at my father.

“Who was Hannah to him?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She was someone Cole hurt.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one I have.””

I grabbed my coat.

My father stood immediately.

“Where are you going?””

I hesitated.

Then I showed him the message.

His expression hardened.

“No.””

“No?””

“You’re seven months pregnant.””

“I’m also the person everyone has been lying to.””

“Sarah—”

“I need answers.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’ll go with you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Absolutely not.””

“She asked me to come alone.””

“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t go.””

I looked at him.

“Dad, for two years, I thought you were dead. My mother erased you from my life. My husband built an entire relationship with me while hiding another one.””

My voice cracked.

“I can’t keep letting other people decide what I can handle.””

Daniel went quiet.

Because he knew I was right.

Ten minutes later, I was driving toward the address.

Alone.

The road led away from town, past quiet neighborhoods and empty fields. My hands stayed tight around the steering wheel.

I kept thinking about Cole.

The way he looked at the photograph.

The fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

That was what bothered me most.

The address belonged to an old farmhouse outside Nashville.

It looked abandoned.

The paint was peeling. The grass was overgrown. One porch light flickered above the door.

I almost turned around.

Then the door opened.

A woman stepped outside.

Hannah.

She looked older than the photograph.

Her dark hair was shorter. There were tired lines around her eyes.

But it was her.

The woman from the hospital.

The woman who had warned me years ago.

“Sarah.””

I stepped back.

“You knew who I was?””

She nodded.

“I’ve known who you were for a long time.””

That sentence made my stomach twist.

“How?””

Hannah looked down.

“Because Cole talked about you.””

“Before he met me?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

She opened the door.

“Come inside. You shouldn’t be standing out here.””

I didn’t move.

“I’m not here to become another person you lie to.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“Then start talking.””

Hannah nodded slowly.

“I met Cole when I was twenty-six.””

“Were you together?””

She looked away.

“For a while.””

“How long?””

“Almost two years.””

The answer hit me.

Two years.

Longer than I had known.

“What happened?””

Hannah walked into the kitchen.

I followed.

She placed an old folder on the table.

“Cole told me he loved me.””

I said nothing.

“He said he was going to leave everything behind.””

“Everything?””

“His job. His family. His life.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Hannah laughed sadly.

“Because Cole always wanted two things.””

“What?””

“Security and excitement.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“And I was what?””

“The excitement.””

My chest hurt.

“And I was the security?””

Hannah looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I hated those words.

Everyone said them after they destroyed something.

“I need proof.””

She nodded.

“I knew you would.””

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Messages.

Photos.

My hands trembled as I read.

The first message was from Cole.

*I can’t lose Sarah. Her family has too much at stake.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Hannah didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

Another message.

*Once I’m married, everything becomes easier.*

The room blurred.

“No.””

Hannah whispered, “Sarah…”

“No.””

I pushed the papers away.

“That’s not possible.””

“I wish it wasn’t.””

I stood.

“My marriage was a plan?””

Hannah looked at me with sympathy.

“I think you were part of one.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Cole.

I stared at the screen.

Hannah looked terrified.

“Don’t answer.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because if he knows you’re here…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Her face went pale.

“He’ll come.””

The call ended.

Immediately, another began.

Cole again.

Then a message appeared.

*I know where you are.*

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Hannah.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

May you like

She just whispered:

“Because Cole has never stopped watching you.””
