Chapter 2: The Secret Before My Baby
My mother sat down slowly on the couch like her legs could no longer hold her.
Cole remained standing.
I noticed something that made my chest tighten.
He wasn’t angry at Darla.
He was afraid of her.
“Start talking,” I said.
Neither of them answered.
The silence was worse than the betrayal.
I crossed my arms over my stomach.
“I am not leaving this room until I know why my husband was kissing my mother in my house.””
Cole rubbed his hands over his face.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You don’t get to say my name like that fixes anything.””
Darla looked down at the floor.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Funny. I never wanted to find out at all.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No, Mom. You don’t.””
The word slipped out before I could stop it.
Mom.
And the second I said it, I hated myself for still seeing her that way.
Darla looked at me with tears filling her eyes.
“We made a terrible choice.””
“We?””
Cole finally spoke.
“It started before I met you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
His shoulders dropped.
“I met your mother years ago.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“When?””
Darla answered.
“Before your wedding.””
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
“You’re telling me you knew each other before I married him?””
Cole nodded.
“We worked at the same charity event. We talked. We became friends.””
“Friends?””
My voice rose.
“You were friends with my mother and never told me?””
“It wasn’t like that at first,” Cole said.
Darla wiped her tears.
“But it became something it shouldn’t have.””
I looked between them.
My husband.
My mother.
Two people who were supposed to protect me.
“How long?””
Neither answered.
“How long?””
This time, I screamed it.
Darla whispered, “Six months.””
The room spun.
Six months.
Six months of my mother coming over for dinner.
Six months of Cole helping her carry groceries.
Six months of both of them smiling at me like nothing was wrong.
“You were in my home.””
Darla cried harder.
“I know.””
“You hugged me.””
“I know.””
“You touched my baby.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
I stepped away from her.
“That’s the part I can’t understand.””
My voice became quiet.
“You stood there today with your hand on my stomach after you had been with my husband.””
Cole looked down.
“Sarah, I was going to end it.””
I turned toward him.
“Were you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
I felt something inside me crack.
“You weren’t.””
He said nothing.
I walked toward the kitchen.
The pantry door was still open.
The broken cup pieces had been cleaned up, but I could still see the place where everything changed.
“How many times?””
Cole followed me.
“Sarah—”
“How many times did you lie to my face?””
He swallowed.
“Too many.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
I pressed my hand against the counter.
“Did you love her?””
Cole didn’t answer.
I turned around.
“Did you love my mother?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I cared about her.””
A strange calm came over me.
Because anger was easier than pain.
“You cared about her.””
I nodded slowly.
“And what about me?””
Cole looked at me.
“I love you.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You love the life we built. You love the house. You love the baby. You love the idea of being forgiven.””
Darla stood behind him.
“Sarah, please.””
I looked at her.
“Did Dad know?””
Her expression changed.
That tiny reaction told me everything.
“My father knew something.””
“No,” Darla whispered.
I turned back to her.
“Did he know?””
She looked away.
And that was when I realized the betrayal was bigger than I imagined.
It wasn’t just my husband and my mother.
It was a secret that had been buried inside my entire family.
Before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed on the table.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
My blood ran cold.
Because the message wasn’t from a stranger.
It was from someone who knew exactly what had been happening.
