Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

The door opened slowly.

For one impossible second, I wondered if grief had finally broken something inside my mind.

Because standing there in the porch light was the one person I thought I would never see again.

My father.

Daniel.

The man whose funeral I had attended two years earlier.

The man whose old photographs sat in a wooden frame above my fireplace.

The man I had cried over until there were no tears left.

He looked older.

Thinner.

His beard was gray around the edges, and there were deep lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there the last time I saw him.

But it was him.

“Dad?””

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

Behind me, Darla gasped.

Cole went completely still.

My father looked past me into the living room.

At my mother.

At my husband.

Then he slowly shook his head.

“I see I’m not too late.””

My legs felt weak.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel stepped inside and closed the door.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Mom told me you died.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“I know.””

I looked at Darla.

She was crying silently.

“You knew?””

My mother covered her face.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“No more secrets.””

My father looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence tonight.””

Daniel walked closer.

But he stopped when he saw me protectively holding my stomach.

A painful look crossed his face.

“My granddaughter?””

I swallowed.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I’ve been watching from a distance.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Darla.

Then at Cole.

“It means I came back because I found out what they were doing.””

Cole stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

My father turned toward him.

The room changed instantly.

This was not the confused man from old family photos.

This was someone who had been carrying anger for a long time.

“You don’t get to tell me where to go in my daughter’s house.””

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“This is complicated.””

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

“No. It’s actually very simple.””

He pointed toward him.

“You betrayed my daughter.””

Then toward Darla.

“You betrayed your own child.””

My mother started crying harder.

“Daniel, please.””

“Please what?””

His voice cracked.

“Please pretend I didn’t know?””

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

I felt that familiar anger building again.

“What are you all hiding?””

My father sighed.

“I didn’t die because of an accident.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Darla looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Two years ago, I found out about Cole and your mother.””

My eyes moved to Cole.

He looked terrified.

“You knew?””

My father nodded.

“I found messages. Hotel receipts. Conversations they thought they deleted.””

I felt sick.

“They were together two years ago?””

Cole opened his mouth.

But my father cut him off.

“Don’t.””

The single word stopped him.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your wedding wasn’t built on the truth, Sarah.””

I felt tears forming.

“Dad…”

“I tried to tell you.””

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

I looked at my mother.

She was shaking.

“What did you do?””

Darla whispered, “Sarah…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

My mother’s face collapsed.

“I begged him not to ruin your happiness.””

My father stared at her.

“Your happiness?””

His voice broke.

“You mean your secret?””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

My wedding.

My marriage.

My entire life.

How much of it was real?

I looked at Cole.

“Did you know my dad knew?””

His silence answered.

“You did.””

He looked down.

“I found out later.””

“Later?””

My laugh came out painfully.

“You all keep saying words like they mean nothing.””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

“I brought something for you.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

My hands trembled as I took it.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

I opened it.

Inside were printed photographs.

Dates.

Messages.

Documents.

The first picture showed Cole and Darla together outside a hotel.

The date was six months before my wedding.

I felt my heart sink.

The next was a message from Cole.

A message I had never seen.

*I wish things were different. I wish I met you before Sarah.*

I covered my mouth.

Darla whispered, “I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

My father stepped beside me.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“More?””

His face turned serious.

“Yes.””

He glanced at Cole.

“And this part is why I came back tonight.””

Cole’s expression changed.

“Daniel…”

My father ignored him.

“Sarah, your husband didn’t just hide an affair.””

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“What did he hide?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“He hid why he married you.””

The room went completely silent.

May you like

And then my father said the one thing that made me question every memory I had with Cole.

“Your husband didn’t choose you by accident.””
