Chapter 3: The Person Who Knew

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

The living room felt frozen.

Cole noticed my expression.

“Who is it?””

I locked my phone.

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Sarah, who texted you?””

I looked at him.

“Why are you worried?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped away from both of them.

“Everyone keeps telling me they want to explain. But nobody has told me the truth without being forced.””

Darla stood.

“Sarah, please. That message could be anyone.””

I held up my phone.

“She knew.””

My mother’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You know who sent this.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I watched her carefully.

“You’re lying.””

Darla shook her head.

“I’m scared.””

“For me?””

She looked down.

And I knew.

“For yourself.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Cole moved toward the door.

“I need to talk to whoever sent that.””

I stepped in front of him.

“No.””

“Sarah, I can fix this.””

“You had six months to fix it.””

He stopped.

The man who always knew what to say suddenly had nothing.

I walked into the kitchen and poured myself water.

My hands were shaking.

I hated that.

I hated that my body was reacting to pain my daughter didn’t understand.

The baby shower decorations were still everywhere.

A pink ribbon hung from the doorway.

A stuffed rabbit sat on a chair.

A celebration of a family that might not exist anymore.

“Sarah,” Darla whispered.

I turned.

“Tell me one thing.””

She nodded.

“Did you ever feel guilty?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Every day.””

“Then why?””

She covered her mouth.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She sat down again.

“When I met Cole, I was lonely.””

I stared at her.

“You were married.””

“Yes.””

“You had Dad.””

Her face twisted.

“Your father and I had problems.””

I shook my head.

“So you chose my husband?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I didn’t choose him. It happened slowly.””

I felt sick.

That was the excuse people used when they didn’t want to admit they made choices.

Slowly.

Accidentally.

Until suddenly everyone was hurt.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

I opened it.

And my breath stopped.

It was a picture of Cole and Darla sitting together at a restaurant.

Not recently.

Not from this year.

The date was three years earlier.

Before my wedding.

Before I became pregnant.

Before I thought I knew my own family.

I looked at my mother.

“You said six months.””

Her face went white.

Cole looked at the phone.

“Sarah…”

I stepped back.

“You lied again.””

Darla started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By lying?””

“No.””

“Then what were you protecting?””

Nobody answered.

The silence told me the truth.

I looked at Cole.

“You knew the whole time.””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know about that photo.””

“But you knew you met her before our wedding.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

His eyes closed.

“I loved you.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

The room became quiet.

Then a knock came from the front door.

All three of us froze.

Nobody was supposed to be there.

Everyone had left.

Another knock.

Stronger this time.

Cole whispered, “Who is that?””

I didn’t move.

The person outside knocked again.

Then a voice came through the door.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

“Sarah?””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to my father.

And my father had been gone for two years.

May you like

The door handle slowly turned.

And before anyone could speak, the door opened.
