Chapter 11: The Enemy I Never Saw
Cole stood across from me.
The man I married.
The man who betrayed me.
And somehow, the man who was now telling me the truth about my own family.
I hated that I needed him.
I hated that he was still the person standing closest to the answers.
“Explain.””
Cole looked at my father.
Daniel didn’t move.
“You owe her the truth,” Cole said.
My father’s expression hardened.
“Don’t pretend you’re doing this for her.””
Cole looked away.
“I’m not.””
That honesty surprised me.
“Then why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I know what it feels like to lose everything because of a secret.””
I almost laughed.
“You lost everything?””
My voice sharpened.
“You had choices.””
He lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
That was the first time he admitted it.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just guilt.
I looked at my father.
“Did you ruin his family?””
Daniel sat down.
Slowly.
“I made decisions.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He sighed.
“Cole’s father, Richard Bennett, was my business partner.””
I already knew that part.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at his hands.
“Richard was stealing money from the company.””
Cole nodded.
“He says that because he wanted everyone to believe he was innocent.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You know the truth.””
“Do I?””
The tension between them was immediate.
I stepped between their anger.
“No.””
Both men stopped.
“I am done watching everyone fight around me while I’m left with half the story.””
I pointed at my father.
“You.””
Then Cole.
“You.””
“You’re going to tell me everything.””
Nobody argued.
Daniel spoke first.
“When I discovered what Richard was doing, I reported him.””
Cole’s face tightened.
“My father lost everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“He went to prison.””
“Yes.””
Cole looked at me.
“That’s what started my family’s hatred toward yours.””
I felt sick.
“So this was revenge?””
Cole didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“Was it?””
He whispered:
“At first.””
The room went silent.
My heart sank.
“At first?””
Cole nodded.
“When I met you, I knew who you were.””
I felt tears forming.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you still approached me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked broken.
“My father left me with nothing.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He swallowed.
“I wanted access to your family.””
The words hurt even though I expected them.
“And then?””
His eyes filled.
“Then I fell in love with you.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get a happy ending because your feelings changed.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I stepped closer.
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You betrayed me with my mother.””
His voice broke.
“Yes.””
The silence afterward was heavy.
Then my father said something that changed everything.
“Cole wasn’t the only one planning revenge.””
I turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
My mother’s name immediately came to my mind.
“Mom?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Someone else.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
*Your father is leaving out the worst part.*
I frowned.
Another message followed.
*Ask him who paid Richard Bennett.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who paid him?””
His face went pale.
Cole stepped forward.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“Answer.””
Daniel didn’t.
That was when I knew.
“You did.””
My father looked at me.
“I had no choice.””
I felt my heart break.
“No choice?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By becoming the person you hated?””
Nobody spoke.
Then another message appeared.
This one included a photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
Darla.
Standing beside Richard Bennett.
My breath stopped.
The date was clear.
It was taken one month before my wedding.
My mother wasn’t just part of Cole’s secret.
She was connected to his father too.
May you like
And then I saw the caption.
*Your mother started this.*
