Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Ring
I didn’t leave immediately.
That was the part I still couldn’t explain.
Every instinct told me to run.
But I stayed.
Because for the first time in days, someone was finally giving me pieces of the truth.
Hannah sat across from me.
Her hands were wrapped around a cup of untouched coffee.
“He knows you’re here?””
I asked.
She nodded.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the phone.
The message remained on the screen.
*I know where you are.*
“He tracked me?””
Hannah looked uncomfortable.
“Maybe.””
“Maybe?””
She sighed.
“Cole always had a way of knowing things.””
The answer bothered me.
“Explain.””
“When we were together, he would show up places I never told him about.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“He said he had a feeling.””
I felt a chill.
“That’s not normal.””
“No.””
Hannah looked down.
“That’s why I got scared.””
I leaned forward.
“What happened between you two?””
For a moment, she didn’t speak.
Then she said:
“I found out Cole wasn’t just lying to me.””
The room became quiet.
“He was lying about everything.””
I waited.
“He told me he owned his business.””
“He didn’t?””
“No.””
“What did he own?””
Hannah looked at me.
“Nothing.””
The answer stunned me.
“What?””
“He was drowning in debt.””
I remembered the bank documents.
The money from my mother.
“He needed money.””
Hannah nodded.
“And then he met Darla.””
My stomach turned.
“My mother.””
“Yes.””
“Did she know about you?””
Hannah hesitated.
“Yes.””
That hurt differently.
“How?””
“She found out about us before your wedding.””
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“She knew he had someone else?””
“Yes.””
“And she still encouraged me to marry him?””
Hannah looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed quietly.
“My mother and my husband destroyed my life together.””
Hannah reached across the table.
“I know this is hard.””
I pulled my hand away.
“I don’t need comfort.””
I looked at the documents.
“I need the truth.””
She nodded.
“Then here’s the truth.””
She opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Cole.
My mother.
A lawyer’s office.
A date.
Three days before my wedding.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
“Your mother and Cole met with an attorney.””
“Why?””
Hannah slid a document across the table.
I read the heading.
*Financial Agreement.*
My hands went numb.
“What is this?””
Hannah whispered:
“Your mother helped protect Cole from his debts.””
I looked closer.
There were signatures.
Darla Whitmore.
Cole Bennett.
And another name.
Mine.
My heart stopped.
“My name is on this.””
Hannah nodded.
“Cole used your marriage documents to access money.””
I pushed away from the table.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, I would have known.””
“You didn’t.””
The truth was unbearable.
Because she was right.
I had signed countless papers before my wedding.
Insurance.
Housing.
Bank forms.
Things Cole told me were normal.
I trusted him.
I trusted everyone.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Cole.
*You’re making a mistake.*
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask Hannah why she disappeared.*
I looked up.
Hannah’s face changed.
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s trying to make you afraid of me.””
“Are you telling the truth?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
She looked toward the window.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Because the last time I tried to expose Cole…”
The front porch creaked.
Both of us froze.
Someone was outside.
Hannah stopped breathing.
“Sarah.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
May you like
She whispered:
“He’s here.””
