Chapter 14: The Last Secret
The police station smelled like old coffee and exhaustion.
I sat in a chair beside Hannah while she answered questions.
Her hands were shaking.
Not from fear anymore.
From a pain no mother should ever feel.
“My son wouldn’t just leave,” she repeated.
The officer nodded.
“What is his name?””
“Evan.””
“How old?””
“Four.””
I looked down.
Four years old.
A child who had existed this entire time.
A child Cole never talked about.
A child who had disappeared the same night everything finally came to light.
The officer looked at Cole.
“You’re the father?””
Cole nodded.
“Yes.””
The word sounded strange.
Because I had never heard him say it before.
The officer wrote something down.
“When was the last time you saw him?””
Cole looked uncomfortable.
“Two years ago.””
Hannah stared at him.
“Don’t.””
Her voice was full of anger.
“You don’t get to pretend you were involved.””
Cole looked down.
“I know.””
“You abandoned him.””
“I was afraid.””
“You were always afraid.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
The officer stood.
“We’ll need information from everyone.””
My father sat beside me.
“You okay?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
I looked at the floor.
“My entire life feels fake.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Not everything was fake.””
I looked at him.
“What wasn’t?””
He touched my hand.
“Your love for your daughter.””
My eyes filled.
That was the only thing left that felt real.
Hours passed.
Questions.
Phone calls.
Reports.
Then suddenly, Hannah’s phone rang.
She answered.
“Hello?””
Her face changed.
“What?””
She stood.
“Where?””
Everyone looked at her.
She covered her mouth.
Then whispered:
“They found him.””
My heart jumped.
“Evan?””
She nodded.
But she wasn’t relieved.
She was terrified.
“What is it?””
She looked at Cole.
“They found him at Richard Bennett’s old property.””
The room went silent.
Cole stood immediately.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
The officer looked at him.
“Why?””
Cole didn’t answer.
And I knew.
“Why, Cole?””
He swallowed.
“Because my father has been dead for years.””
Nobody spoke.
The officer frowned.
“Then explain why a four-year-old boy was found inside a house owned by a dead man.””
The world seemed to stop.
An hour later, we arrived at the property.
It was an old abandoned house surrounded by trees.
The kind of place people forgot existed.
But someone had been there recently.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, there were toys.
Blankets.
Food.
Someone had been caring for Evan.
Someone had been hiding him.
Hannah ran when she saw the officer carrying a small child outside.
“Evan!””
The little boy cried when he saw her.
The sound broke everyone.
She held him tightly.
“My baby.””
I watched Cole.
He stood frozen.
Tears ran down his face.
Not because he was caught.
Because he was seeing his son for the first time in years.
Then Evan looked past Hannah.
At me.
And said something that made my blood freeze.
“Mommy said not to trust the lady who has Daddy’s baby.””
I looked at Hannah.
She went pale.
“What did he say?””
The boy looked confused.
“She said Daddy would come back for us.””
Cole stepped back.
“Who told him that?””
Nobody answered.
Then the officer walked out of the house holding an envelope.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Cole turned.
“This was found inside.””
The officer handed it to him.
Cole opened it.
His face changed.
“What is it?””
He didn’t respond.
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Cole handed me the paper.
Only one sentence was written.
In handwriting I recognized.
May you like
My mother’s.
*Sarah was never supposed to know the truth.*
