Chapter 7: The Confession That Accused My Mother-in-Law

I couldn't move.

Margaret Carter sat across from me, staring at the letter Richard had written two days before his death.

Her name appeared in the final paragraph.

The woman who had comforted me after discovering my husband's affair was now being accused of helping someone forge her dead husband's will.

"Margaret," I whispered.

"What does this mean?""

She looked at the document.

"I don't know.""

Robert Hayes, the family attorney, adjusted his glasses.

"Mrs. Carter, this statement was notarized. Richard specifically requested that it be kept separate from his estate documents.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Richard was taking medication during his final weeks. He wasn't thinking clearly.""

Robert placed another document on the table.

"This statement was witnessed by two independent individuals. Both confirmed that Richard was mentally competent when he signed it.""

Margaret's hands began trembling.

"You're suggesting I stole from my own husband?""

"I'm suggesting we need to understand why he wrote this.""

I looked at her.

"Mom, did you ever change Richard's will?""

She immediately turned toward me.

"Emily, I swear I never forged anything.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She looked down.

For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking clock.

Then she finally spoke.

"Yes. I changed one version of his will.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"Richard asked me to remove certain provisions after he discovered Daniel had been mismanaging the company. He wanted to protect the business.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Did Richard authorize the changes in writing?""

Margaret nodded.

"He gave me instructions. But the original document was supposed to be revised by his attorney.""

"Which attorney?""

"His personal estate lawyer. A man named Charles Whitmore.""

Robert immediately wrote the name down.

"Do you have those instructions?""

Margaret stood up and walked toward the study.

"Yes.""

She returned with a small notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes, dates, and several signatures.

Robert examined them carefully.

"These may help establish what Richard actually intended.""

I looked at Margaret.

"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?""

She sat down.

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of what?""

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

"Richard and I had been fighting for months. I knew about Patricia. I knew about Vanessa.

I knew he had another child somewhere. But I didn't know you were that child.""

Her voice cracked.

"When I discovered the truth, I was furious. I wanted to destroy every document that connected him to Patricia.""

I stared at her.

"Did you?""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. I couldn't do it. Whatever Richard had done, you deserved the truth.""

Robert closed the notebook.

"There's something else we need to consider.""

He connected the flash drive to his laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were several audio recordings.

The first was dated three days before Richard died.

Robert pressed play.

Richard's voice filled the dining room.

"If Daniel ever discovers Emily is my daughter, he will try to control her inheritance. I know my son. He believes everything belongs to him.""

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

"Margaret has made mistakes, but she is not the person I'm most afraid of. Someone has been helping Daniel access documents he shouldn't have.""

Robert paused.

"Listen to the next part.""

Richard continued.

"The person who helped him knows the original will, knows the bank arrangements, and knows how to make a forged signature appear legitimate.""

A second voice entered the recording.

It was a woman's voice.

A voice I recognized.

Margaret's.

"Richard, you promised me Daniel would be protected.""

Then Richard replied.

"I promised I would protect my family. That doesn't mean protecting him from the consequences of his actions.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Margaret.

"That was you.""

She nodded slowly.

"I remember that conversation.""

"What did you mean when you said he promised Daniel would be protected?""

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"Daniel had made mistakes at the company before. Richard wanted to give him another chance. I begged him not to report Daniel's earlier financial misconduct.""

Robert looked up sharply.

"Earlier misconduct?""

Margaret nodded.

"Two years before Richard died, Daniel transferred company money into an account he controlled. Richard discovered it and confronted him. He agreed to repay everything.""

"Did he?""

"No.""

I felt sick.

"So this has been happening for years?""

Margaret didn't answer.

Robert examined the recording timestamps.

"There's another file.""

He opened it.

A video appeared.

Richard was sitting in his office, looking tired but alert.

He stared directly into the camera.

"My name is Richard Carter. If this recording is being reviewed, I want it understood that my final will was not prepared by Margaret, Daniel, or any member of my family.""

He paused.

"The only person authorized to hold the original is my attorney, Charles Whitmore.""

Robert immediately stopped the video.

His face had gone pale.

"What's wrong?"" I asked.

He turned the laptop toward us.

"Charles Whitmore died eleven months ago.""

Margaret frowned.

"That's impossible. He was handling Richard's estate.""

Robert checked his phone.

Then he looked at us.

"I just received a message from his former legal assistant.""

"What did it say?"" Margaret asked.

Robert read it aloud.

"Mr. Hayes, I believe you need to know that Charles Whitmore didn't die naturally. His death was originally investigated as an accident, but his office records suggest someone removed several files the night before he died.""

My stomach dropped.

Robert continued reading.

"One of the missing files contained the original Carter family will. The person who signed out that file was Daniel Carter.""

I looked at Margaret.

She whispered something I would never forget.

"My God. My son knew Charles was dead before anyone told him.""

Then Robert's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name that made Margaret stand abruptly.

*Vanessa Williams.*
