Chapter 3: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the ticking clock on Margaret's dining room wall.

Daniel was standing beside the table, holding two torn pieces of a photograph.

His mother had just told me that the woman he was cheating with might be his half-sister.

And somehow, that wasn't even the worst part.

"Margaret," I whispered, "what exactly happened twenty-three years ago?""

She pulled out the handwritten confession.

"My husband, Richard, had a relationship with a woman named Patricia before we married.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's ancient history.""

Margaret ignored him.

"Patricia became pregnant. Richard promised he would take responsibility, but he was already engaged to me. He told Patricia he would arrange everything privately.""

"Did you know?"" I asked.

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Not at first.""

She explained that Richard had told her he was helping an old family friend financially. He transferred money regularly, but whenever she asked questions, he became defensive.

They married, built their business, and raised Daniel.

Then, years later, Patricia contacted Richard.

She told him their daughter, Vanessa, wanted to meet her father.

Richard refused.

According to Margaret, he offered Patricia money in exchange for keeping the girl's existence secret.

I stared at the confession.

"Why didn't he tell you?""

"Because he was afraid of losing everything.""

Daniel threw the torn photograph onto the table.

"You're making Dad sound like a criminal. He supported that woman for years!""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Supporting your daughter financially is not the same as pretending she doesn't exist.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"She wasn't part of our family.""

"She was his child.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Does Vanessa know?""

Margaret nodded.

"She found out when she was twenty-one. Richard eventually admitted the truth.""

"And you?""

"I discovered everything after his death.""

That was when Margaret explained why the envelope existed.

Richard had died eighteen months earlier. During the weeks following his funeral, Margaret discovered a locked cabinet in his private office.

Inside were old letters, bank transfers, legal correspondence, and documents connected to Patricia and Vanessa.

She had hired an attorney to investigate.

But before the investigation could be completed, the company's financial records began showing suspicious activity.

And Daniel's name kept appearing.

I looked at my husband.

"Did you know Vanessa was your father's daughter?""

He didn't answer.

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"Answer her.""

Daniel walked toward the window.

"I knew.""

My stomach dropped.

"Since when?""

"About a year.""

"A year?"" I repeated.

He rubbed his face.

"Vanessa contacted me. She wanted access to Dad's estate. She said she deserved a share.""

"And you decided to start sleeping with her?""

"That's not how it happened!""

"Then tell me how it happened!""

Daniel turned around.

"She came to me because she needed help. She was angry, confused, and had nowhere to go. I helped her get an apartment.""

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"You helped her with two hundred and eighty thousand dollars?""

Daniel slammed his fist against the window frame.

"She was threatening to go public!""

I stared at him.

"So you paid her to stay quiet?""

"Yes!""

The admission hung in the room.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Daniel continued speaking, his voice becoming increasingly desperate.

"She said she would destroy the company. She wanted money, and she wanted recognition. I thought if I gave her what she wanted, everything would disappear.""

"What about the marriage certificate?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"It was part of the arrangement.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You married your father's daughter?""

"It was supposed to be temporary!""

Margaret stood up so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

"Do you hear yourself?""

Daniel raised his hands.

"Mom, I was trying to protect the family!""

"No. You were protecting yourself.""

She walked to the cabinet and retrieved a glass of water.

Her hands were shaking.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Emily, there's another reason Richard left those documents.""

I looked at her.

"What reason?""

"Because he discovered Vanessa wasn't the only person Patricia had been hiding from him.""

Daniel suddenly stopped moving.

Margaret opened the confession and turned to its final page.

There was a paragraph written in Richard's handwriting.

She read it slowly.

If anything happens to me, make sure Daniel understands that the truth about Vanessa is only the beginning. Patricia has another child. And that child has a legal claim to something I never intended to leave to Daniel.

I looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely pale.

"Another child?"" I whispered.

Margaret nodded.

"Richard believed Patricia had given birth to a second child years later. He never knew where that child was.""

Daniel shook his head.

"This is ridiculous.""

But his voice sounded different now.

Almost frightened.

Margaret removed a final envelope from the folder.

It contained a birth certificate.

The father's name was Richard Carter.

The mother's name was Patricia Williams.

And the child's name was...

Emily Carter.

My blood turned cold.

I stared at the paper.

"That's impossible.""

Margaret slowly looked at me.

"Emily, what was your mother's maiden name before she married your father?""

I could barely breathe.

"Patricia Williams.""

Daniel took one step backward.

Margaret reached for my hand.

"Sweetheart, I think we've been looking at the wrong family secret all along.""

I looked at the birth certificate again.

Then I noticed the date.

It was the exact date of my birth.

And suddenly, I understood why Richard Carter had paid for my college education without ever explaining where the money came from.

I wasn't simply his daughter-in-law.

May you like

I might have been his daughter.

And Daniel might have known all along.
