Chapter 2: The $280,000 Secret
Margaret removed several bank statements from the envelope.
She arranged them carefully across the dining table.
Daniel remained standing.
"Mom, this is private business.""
Margaret didn't even look up.
"Then you shouldn't have used company money to finance your private lifestyle.""
My hands began trembling.
"What withdrawals?""
Margaret turned toward me.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"That's how much Daniel transferred from the company accounts over approximately eleven months.""
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
"Those figures are misleading!""
Margaret calmly pointed to a statement.
"Three payments to a luxury apartment complex. Six payments to a vehicle leasing company. Hotel reservations, jewelry purchases, and international flights.""
She slid another page toward me.
"Every payment was connected to Vanessa.""
I looked at Daniel.
"You're paying for her apartment?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Emily, listen. It's complicated.""
"Is it complicated that you bought another woman a car while telling me we needed to cut back on household expenses?""
He said nothing.
I remembered the previous winter.
Daniel had complained about our mortgage payments. He'd suggested I stop ordering coffee from the little café near my office because we needed to save money.
Meanwhile, he had apparently been paying another woman's rent.
Margaret continued.
"Your father discovered these transactions while reviewing the quarterly accounts. He initially thought there had been an accounting error.""
Daniel pulled out his chair.
"Can we stop pretending Dad was some innocent businessman? He moved money around all the time.""
"Your father authorized every transaction he made," Margaret replied.
"You concealed yours.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"You don't understand what I was dealing with.""
Margaret looked directly at him.
"Then explain why you used your wife's personal information.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She removed another document.
It was a loan agreement.
The amount printed near the top made my breath catch.
$450,000.
My full legal name appeared beneath the borrower's signature.
Except I had never seen the document before.
I picked it up.
"Daniel...""
He looked away.
"What's this?""
"An investment loan," he muttered.
"Why is my name on it?""
"Because we were married.""
"That's not an answer.""
Margaret reached across the table and touched my wrist.
"Emily, you never signed this agreement, did you?""
"No.""
Daniel finally looked at me.
"Don't start making accusations before you understand the situation.""
I held the paper closer.
The signature looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
But the capital E was wrong. I always crossed the middle stroke twice. Whoever had signed this hadn't.
"Someone forged my signature.""
Daniel stood up.
"You're blowing this out of proportion!""
Margaret pushed her chair back.
"Sit down.""
He ignored her.
"Mom, you have no idea what you're doing. You're turning my wife against me over a business arrangement.""
Margaret opened a second folder.
"Your father has already contacted the company's attorneys.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What?""
"The bank has requested supporting documents. The investigators have also requested the original loan application.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You went behind my back?""
"No, Daniel. You went behind everyone's back.""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.
"Why?""
Daniel looked at me.
"What?""
"Why did you do this? Why cheat on me? Why steal money? Why put my name on a loan I never agreed to?""
He exhaled sharply.
"Emily, you have to understand. I was under pressure. The company wasn't doing as well as everyone thought. I needed money to keep certain projects moving.""
"Then why was Vanessa receiving it?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than any explanation could.
Margaret gathered the papers.
"There's something else.""
Daniel immediately looked at her.
"Mom, no.""
She removed a photograph from the bottom of the envelope.
It showed Daniel standing outside a courthouse with Vanessa.
The date printed on the back was six weeks earlier.
Vanessa was holding a document.
I recognized the official seal.
It was a marriage certificate.
My throat tightened.
"Why does she have a marriage certificate?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Margaret's voice became quieter.
"Because she and Daniel went to the courthouse together.""
I turned toward my husband.
"Daniel?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you marry her?""
"Emily, it wasn't a real marriage.""
I felt dizzy.
"What does that mean?""
He finally looked at me.
"Vanessa and I filed some paperwork. It was part of a financial arrangement.""
Margaret stared at him.
"Don't insult us with another lie.""
Then she turned the photograph over and pointed to a name written beneath the courthouse date.
"Emily, there's something you need to know about Vanessa.""
I looked at her.
"What's that?""
"She's not just the woman your husband has been seeing.""
Margaret took a shaky breath.
"She's the daughter of the woman your father-in-law secretly married twenty-three years ago.""
My mind struggled to process the sentence.
"Your husband has a half-sister?"" I whispered.
Margaret shook her head.
"Not exactly.""
Daniel suddenly jumped to his feet.
"MOM! STOP!""
Margaret placed the photograph in front of me.
"Vanessa's mother was married to your father-in-law before I ever met him. And the marriage was never properly dissolved.""
I stared at the document.
Then at Daniel.
"Are you telling me Vanessa is your father's daughter?""
Margaret nodded.
But before I could ask another question, Daniel grabbed the photograph and tore it in half.
"You have no right to expose this!""
Margaret didn't move.
She simply reached into the envelope and removed another document.
"This is why I kept the original.""
Daniel's face went white.
Because at the bottom of that document was a name I recognized.
May you like
My father-in-law's.
And beneath it was a handwritten confession dated twenty-three years earlier.
