Chapter 10: The Adoption Secret That Changed Everything
I read the sentence again.
Keep Emily away from Daniel until the adoption records are destroyed.
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Patricia, the woman I had mourned for twelve years.
Then I looked at Margaret, the woman who had treated me like her daughter since the day Daniel introduced us.
"Someone needs to explain what's happening," I said.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Margaret stepped forward.
"Emily, please. Let me explain.""
I held up the bank statement.
"Twelve years of payments. Twelve years of pretending my mother was dead. And now I'm supposed to believe you were protecting me?""
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"I never wanted you to suffer.""
"Then why did you pay her to disappear?""
Patricia moved toward me.
"Because Margaret believed it was the only way to keep you safe.""
I turned sharply.
"Safe from whom?""
Patricia looked down.
"From the people who knew the truth about your birth.""
One of the investigators asked everyone to move inside the apartment.
Patricia agreed.
Her living room was small and poorly furnished. A single photograph sat on the mantel.
It showed me as a little girl standing between Patricia and an unfamiliar man.
I picked it up.
"Who's this?""
Patricia looked at the photograph.
"His name was Michael Bennett.""
"Was he my father?""
She nodded.
"Michael was the man I loved before I met Richard.""
I sat down.
Patricia explained that she had become pregnant when she was twenty-four. Michael wanted to marry her, but his family disapproved of their relationship.
Before they could make plans, Michael died in a construction accident.
A few months later, Patricia met Richard Carter.
Richard was already married to another woman, but he promised Patricia he would help her raise the baby.
When I was born, Richard arranged for my adoption to be handled privately.
"Why?"" I whispered.
"Because Richard wanted to control the situation. He told me Michael's family had been looking for you. He was afraid they would take you away.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Why did my mother raise me under her name?""
"Because Richard arranged everything so that you would legally become my daughter. He paid the adoption expenses and promised to support you.""
Margaret finally spoke.
"Richard told me he had helped a young woman who had lost her husband. I didn't know you were involved until years later.""
I turned toward her.
"But you eventually found out.""
"Yes.""
"When?""
Margaret swallowed.
"After you married Daniel.""
I stared at her.
"Eight years ago?""
She nodded.
"Richard told me the truth shortly before the wedding. He said he had arranged a private adoption and that you had no connection to his biological family.""
I couldn't believe it.
"So when Daniel introduced me to you, you already knew?""
Margaret began crying.
"Yes.""
I stood up.
"Did Daniel know?""
She hesitated.
"Not then.""
Patricia interrupted.
"He found out later. Richard told him everything after he became seriously ill.""
I looked toward my mother.
"Then why did Daniel keep this secret?""
Patricia removed another envelope from a drawer.
"Because the truth changed who could inherit Michael Bennett's estate.""
I frowned.
"What estate?""
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter from a law firm in Boston.
It stated that Michael Bennett had left behind a substantial inheritance for his biological child.
The estate had remained in a trust for decades because Michael had never legally married or acknowledged a child.
The trust documents specified that if a biological child could be identified, that child would inherit the remaining estate.
I read the amount.
My breath caught.
Approximately $18 million.
"That's why Richard wanted the adoption records destroyed," Patricia whispered.
Margaret nodded.
"Richard had been trying to prevent anyone from connecting you to Michael Bennett.""
I looked at her.
"Why would Richard care about someone else's inheritance?""
"Because he had spent years controlling the trust through a business arrangement with Michael's family.""
Robert, who had arrived with additional documents, finally spoke.
"There's another complication. The Bennett estate has been inactive for years. If Emily is Michael's biological daughter, she may be entitled to the entire remaining trust.""
I stared at him.
"How do we prove it?""
Patricia reached into the envelope and removed a hospital record.
"Michael signed this before he died. He knew I was pregnant.""
There was also a DNA testing authorization signed by Michael's brother.
Robert examined the documents.
"This could be significant.""
Margaret sat down heavily.
"I never wanted Daniel to know about this.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
"Because he became obsessed with the money. When Richard told him about Michael's estate, Daniel started asking questions about your adoption.""
Patricia nodded.
"He came to see me. He wanted me to sign a statement saying Michael wasn't your biological father.""
I remembered Vanessa's photograph of Daniel in the hospital corridor.
"What happened when you refused?""
Patricia's voice broke.
"He threatened to tell you I had abandoned you deliberately. He said nobody would believe me.""
I closed my eyes.
My husband hadn't just betrayed our marriage.
He had been trying to erase my identity.
Robert gathered the papers.
"We need to preserve all of this. I'll contact the Bennett estate trustees.""
Then Patricia suddenly reached for my hand.
"Emily, there's one more thing.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"Daniel isn't the only person who has been searching for Michael's money.""
She pointed toward the photograph on the mantel.
"Michael had a brother. His name is Thomas Bennett.""
"Where is he?""
Patricia looked terrified.
"He's the man who signed the adoption papers.""
Before anyone could respond, Robert's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
"Emily, the Bennett estate attorney has confirmed something.""
"What?""
"Thomas Bennett has been trying to locate you for eleven years.""
"Why?""
Robert lowered his voice.
May you like
"Because he believes the original adoption was never legally completed.""
And if that was true, the entire Carter family might have been built around a secret that had never been legally settled.
