Chapter 6: The House He Stole From Me
I stared at Margaret.
For eight years, that house had been my home.
I had chosen the kitchen cabinets, painted the guest bedroom, planted roses along the driveway, and spent countless weekends making it beautiful.
Daniel had told me the property was our greatest investment.
Now I was being told it belonged to Vanessa.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Margaret took my hand.
"Robert, how could this happen?""
"The transfer document contains Emily's electronic signature.""
"I never signed anything transferring my house!""
Robert's voice remained calm.
"Then we have grounds to challenge the transfer. But we need to act quickly.""
I remembered the paperwork Daniel had placed in front of me two weeks before our anniversary trip.
We had been sitting at the kitchen counter.
He had brought me a folder.
"Just some routine refinancing documents, sweetheart," he had said.
I remembered asking whether I needed to read everything.
He had kissed my forehead.
"Of course. But it's standard. The attorney already reviewed it.""
I had signed three pages.
Three.
My stomach twisted.
"Robert, can you send me the documents?""
"I'll email them immediately.""
Margaret looked furious.
"Daniel has gone too far.""
I barely heard her.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
Stop digging into things that don't concern you.
I showed Margaret.
She immediately called the number.
It was disconnected.
Then another message arrived.
This time, it included a photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside my house.
She was holding a key.
The caption read:
Your bedroom looks better with my things in it.
I felt my knees weaken.
Margaret took my phone.
"Don't respond.""
But another message appeared.
Daniel says you should collect your belongings before Friday.
I looked at Margaret.
"He gave her my house.""
She pulled me into her arms.
"We'll get it back.""
For the first time that day, I didn't cry.
Something inside me had changed.
I was no longer trying to understand why Daniel had betrayed me.
I wanted to know how much he had taken.
And I wanted every single thing back.
The next morning, Robert met us at Margaret's house.
He arrived carrying a leather briefcase and a thick stack of documents.
"Emily, I've reviewed the transfer.""
He spread the papers across the dining table.
The deed showed that I had supposedly transferred my ownership interest to a company called Vantage Holdings LLC.
The company had then transferred the property to Vanessa.
I stared at the signatures.
"That's my name.""
Robert nodded.
"But the electronic authorization records are unusual.""
"What do you mean?""
"The document was submitted using an account registered to Daniel's business email address.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"So he signed for her?""
"That's one possibility. We need forensic confirmation.""
Robert opened another folder.
"There is something more concerning. Vantage Holdings was incorporated four months ago.""
"Who owns it?"" I asked.
Robert looked at me.
"Vanessa Williams.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"So my husband created a company with his mistress to steal my home?""
Robert didn't correct me.
Instead, he showed us the financial records.
The company had received several transfers from Carter Construction.
Together, they totaled $280,000.
The same amount Margaret had discovered the previous day.
But the next page revealed something worse.
There were additional transfers from a joint savings account Daniel and I shared.
I stared at the amount.
$96,500.
That account had been intended for our future children.
I remembered depositing money into it every month.
I had skipped vacations, postponed buying new furniture, and worked overtime to build that savings.
Daniel had emptied almost everything.
Margaret placed her hand over mine.
"Emily, I'm so sorry.""
I shook my head.
"Don't apologize for him.""
Robert continued.
"There's enough evidence to request an emergency court order preventing further transfers. We can also challenge the property deed and preserve the company's remaining assets.""
"How long will that take?"" I asked.
"It depends on the court.""
I looked at the documents.
"What about the original will?""
Robert opened his briefcase.
"I have something interesting.""
He removed a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Emily.
The handwriting was unmistakably Richard's.
Margaret stood up.
"Robert, where did you get that?""
"It was delivered to my office this morning.""
I stared at the envelope.
"The one Daniel stole?""
Robert nodded.
"Someone left it at reception without identifying themselves.""
I slowly opened it.
Inside was a letter and a small flash drive.
The letter began:
Dear Emily,
If you are reading this, then Daniel has probably discovered the truth about your birth. There are things I should have told you years ago. I failed you, and I cannot change that.
My eyes filled with tears.
I continued reading.
But I need you to understand that the inheritance was never the real reason I protected you.
I stopped.
Margaret leaned closer.
"What does the next paragraph say?""
I swallowed and continued.
The person who forged the first version of my will was not Daniel. It was someone I trusted with every legal document in my life.
Robert's expression changed.
"Emily, keep reading.""
The final paragraph contained a name.
I looked at Margaret.
Then at Robert.
My voice trembled.
"Richard says the person responsible was...""
I couldn't finish.
Because the name written on the page belonged to Margaret Carter.
Margaret slowly sat down.
And for the first time since I had met her, she looked genuinely terrified.
"Emily," she whispered, "you have to listen to me. I can explain why my name is there.""
Then Robert opened his briefcase and placed another document beside the letter.
It was a notarized statement.
Signed by Richard.

Dated two days before his death.
And it contained a confession that could destroy everything Margaret had spent twenty-three years building.
