Chapter 1: Thirty Minutes to Get Home
The moment my husband saw his mother standing beside me at the mall, he looked like a man who had just watched his entire future collapse.
But the slap Margaret Carter delivered across his face was nothing compared to what she had waiting for him at home.
My name is Emily Carter. I was thirty-six years old, and I'd been married to Daniel for eight years.
I used to believe I had the kind of marriage people secretly envied.
Daniel and I lived in a beautiful house outside Atlanta, Georgia. We had no children, but we'd talked about starting a family once his career stabilized. I worked as an accountant, while Daniel managed operations at his family's construction company.
His mother, Margaret, was one of the few people who had always made me feel genuinely loved.
She called me her daughter, remembered my birthday, and never missed an opportunity to tell Daniel how lucky he was to have me.
That Saturday, she invited me shopping.
We were walking through an upscale mall when she suggested stopping at a jewelry store.
"Emily, sweetheart, you should buy yourself something nice," Margaret said, examining a diamond bracelet.
"Mom, I don't need another bracelet.""
"That's exactly what you said last Christmas. I'm beginning to think you don't know how to spoil yourself.""
I laughed.
Then she suddenly stopped.
Her smile disappeared.
"Emily...""
I turned toward her.
"What's wrong?""
She pointed toward a designer boutique across the hallway.
"Is that Daniel?""
I followed her gaze.
And my entire world went silent.
Daniel was standing outside the boutique with a young blonde woman. She wore an expensive cream-colored dress, carried a designer handbag, and had her arm wrapped around his.
Then he did something that made my stomach turn.
He lifted her hand and kissed her fingers.
A moment later, he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
My shopping bags slipped from my fingers.
"Mom..."" I whispered.
"That's my husband.""
Margaret didn't immediately respond.
She looked at Daniel, then at me.
Her expression changed from confusion to something I had never seen before.
Anger.
"Come with me, sweetheart.""
She walked straight toward them.
"Daniel!""
My husband turned.
The color drained from his face.
"Mom? Emily? What are you doing here?""
The blonde woman immediately released his hand.
Margaret didn't ask questions.
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the shopping corridor.
Several people turned around.
Daniel grabbed his cheek.
"Mom! Have you completely lost your mind?""
Margaret pointed at me.
"How dare you humiliate your wife like this? That woman stood beside you when you lost your job. She paid your bills, cared for you when you were sick, and defended you when your own relatives questioned your decisions!""
"Mom, this isn't what it looks like.""
"Then explain it.""
Daniel glanced at the blonde woman.
She looked between us.
"Wait. Your wife?""
I couldn't speak.
Margaret answered for me.
"Yes, sweetheart. Emily is his wife. They've been married for eight years.""
The woman's face went pale.
"Daniel, you told me you were divorced.""
I felt something inside my chest crack.
"Divorced?""
Daniel reached for her arm.
"Vanessa, please. Don't listen to them. I can explain.""
She pulled away.
"You told me your marriage ended three years ago!""
Margaret stepped between them.
"Don't touch her. You've lied enough for one afternoon.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Mom, can we please discuss this privately?""
Margaret looked at him with disgust.
"You have thirty minutes to get home.""
He actually laughed.
"Excuse me?""
"Thirty minutes, Daniel. Not thirty-one.""
"You're treating me like I'm twelve.""
"No. I'm treating you like a grown man who has forgotten what honesty means.""
She picked up my shopping bags, took my hand, and walked away.
I didn't look back.
During the drive to her house, I stared through the passenger window.
My phone kept vibrating.
Daniel called seven times.
Then came the messages.
Emily, don't make this worse.
My mother is exaggerating.
Please don't believe everything you heard.
I finally turned off my phone.
When we arrived, Margaret led me into her kitchen and made me sit down.
I tried to hold myself together.
I really did.
But when she placed a glass of water in front of me, I started crying.
"Mom, what am I supposed to do?""
She pulled out a chair and sat beside me.
"First, you're going to stop blaming yourself.""
"I thought he loved me.""
Margaret took my hand.
"I know.""
"How long has this been happening?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she stood up and walked into her study.
I heard a drawer unlock.
When she returned, she carried a thick brown envelope.
She placed it on the dining table.
"Margaret, what's that?""
She looked at me sadly.
"Something I hoped I'd never have to show you.""
Twenty-seven minutes after we arrived, Daniel's car pulled into the driveway.
He stormed inside.
"Mom! You embarrassed me in front of an entire shopping mall!""
Margaret pointed toward the chair opposite her.
"Sit down.""
"I'm not a child!""
"No. You're a grown man who has been lying to his wife.""
Daniel's eyes fell on the envelope.
For the first time since entering the house, he stopped shouting.
"Mom...""
Margaret opened it.
"Three months ago, your father discovered some unusual withdrawals from the family business.""
May you like
Daniel went completely still.
And I realized the affair wasn't the only secret Margaret had been hiding.
