Chapter 11: The Man Who Had Been Searching for Me

Thomas Bennett arrived at Margaret's house the following afternoon.

He was seventy-two years old, tall, silver-haired, and carried a leather folder that looked older than some of the furniture.

When Margaret opened the door, he stopped.

"Margaret Carter?""

She nodded.

"Thomas.""

His eyes moved toward me.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he whispered, "You have Michael's eyes.""

I didn't know what to say.

Robert invited him inside.

Thomas placed his folder on the dining table.

"I've spent eleven years trying to find you, Emily.""

I sat opposite him.

"Why?""

"Because your uncle Michael left something for you. And because I believe someone deliberately hid your existence.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs of Michael Bennett.

One showed a young man standing beside Patricia.

Another showed him holding a baby.

Me.

I picked up the photograph.

"That's me?""

Thomas nodded.

"Michael took that picture three weeks before his accident.""

My eyes filled.

I had spent my entire life believing I had no connection to the Bennett family.

Now a stranger was showing me photographs of a father I had never known.

"Why didn't you find me sooner?""

Thomas sighed.

"Because Richard Carter made sure you disappeared from every record we could access.""

He explained that Michael had been a successful real estate developer in Boston. His company owned several commercial properties and had substantial investments.

When Michael died, Thomas became the executor of his estate.

He knew Patricia was pregnant.

But before the birth, Richard contacted him.

Richard claimed Patricia had decided to give the baby up for adoption.

Thomas believed him.

Years later, when he discovered that Patricia had actually raised a daughter, he began searching.

"Why did it take eleven years?"" I asked.

"Because every time we got close, someone changed the records.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Do you have evidence?""

Thomas opened another section of the folder.

"Yes.""

He showed us a series of letters exchanged between Richard and an attorney named Charles Whitmore.

One letter contained a payment instruction.

The amount was $75,000.

The recipient was a private adoption agency.

Another letter contained a handwritten note.

The child must remain disconnected from the Bennett estate until the trust expires.

I felt sick.

"Richard paid someone to hide me?""

Thomas nodded.

"And he wasn't working alone.""

Margaret lowered her head.

Thomas looked at her.

"You knew, didn't you?""

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"I knew Richard had made arrangements. I didn't know the full extent.""

Thomas shook his head.

"Your family has taken enough from this girl.""

Margaret didn't argue.

I examined the letters.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Charles Whitmore.

The same attorney connected to Richard's missing will.

"Why would Charles help Richard?""

Thomas answered.

"Because he was being paid from the Bennett estate.""

Robert immediately sat upright.

"That would constitute a serious conflict of interest.""

Thomas nodded.

"And there's another problem. Michael's trust was never supposed to be controlled by Richard Carter. Yet Richard somehow gained access to its financial records.""

I looked at him.

"How much money was there?""

"Originally, the trust contained approximately $22 million. Today, we estimate that about $18 million remains.""

I struggled to process the amount.

Thomas continued.

"Michael wanted you to have it. He left a letter explaining exactly why.""

He removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written on the front.

This time, I recognized the handwriting from the photograph.

Michael Bennett.

My hands shook as I opened it.

To my daughter,

I don't know whether I'll ever get to hold you. But if I don't, I want you to know that you were loved before you were born.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

Thomas waited patiently.

I continued.

Your mother has promised to tell you about me when you're old enough. If circumstances prevent that, my brother will find you. You deserve to know where you came from.

The letter ended with a sentence that broke me.

Nothing I leave behind can replace the years I might lose with you. But I hope it gives you the freedom to build the life I wanted for you.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For the first time, I felt connected to a man I had never met.

Then Thomas spoke.

"Emily, there's a reason I've come now.""

He opened a final document.

It was a notice from the Bennett estate trustees.

The trust had received an application claiming that Michael's biological daughter had died without descendants.

The application had been submitted six months earlier.

I stared at the signature.

Daniel Carter.

My husband had attempted to declare me dead.

Robert immediately took photographs of the document.

"Who submitted this?""

"Daniel, through a company called Vantage Holdings.""

Margaret stood up.

"He told me he was protecting the estate!""

Thomas looked at her coldly.

"He was trying to take it.""

I looked at the application again.

It contained a forged death certificate.

My name.

My birth date.

And a date of death that was three months earlier.

I whispered, "He tried to make me disappear.""

Thomas nodded.

"And there's something else.""

He removed a second page.

It was a list of intended beneficiaries.

Daniel's name appeared first.

Vanessa's name appeared second.

But a third name appeared beneath theirs.

Patricia Williams.

I looked toward my mother.

"Why is your name there?""

Patricia began crying.

"Because Daniel promised me he would give me a share if I signed the statement saying you were dead.""

I stepped backward.

"Mom...""

She lowered her head.

"I didn't sign it, Emily. I swear.""

Thomas placed another document beside it.

"There's one person who can confirm everything.""

"Who?""

He looked toward the front door.

"Charles Whitmore's former assistant. She has the original adoption file, and she knows who ordered the forged death certificate.""

Before anyone could speak, the doorbell rang.

Margaret opened it.

A young woman stood outside, holding a small package.

"Are you Emily Carter?""

I nodded.

She handed me the package.

"Someone asked me to deliver this. He said you needed to see it before the hearing.""

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.

If you want to know who really arranged your disappearance, watch the recording.

At the bottom was a name.

*Daniel Carter.*
