Chapter 12: My Husband's Final Confession
We gathered around Robert's laptop.
The flash drive contained three video files.
The first was dated four months earlier.
Daniel appeared on screen, sitting in his office.
He looked tired, but his voice was clear.
"Vanessa, I don't care what you think you're entitled to. Emily must never learn about Michael Bennett.""
A woman's voice responded.
"What if she already knows?""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Then we use the adoption records. We make it look like Patricia falsified everything.""
The video ended.
Margaret covered her mouth.
"That's my son.""
I continued watching.
The second recording showed Daniel meeting a man in a parking garage.
I recognized the man immediately.
Charles Whitmore.
The attorney Richard had trusted.
Daniel handed him an envelope.
Charles counted the money.
Then he said something that made Robert pause the video.
"Once the original records disappear, nobody will be able to prove anything.""
Daniel replied.
"What about the death certificate?""
Charles smiled.
"That part is already handled.""
My stomach turned.
Robert replayed the final seconds.
The date was visible.
Charles Whitmore had been alive eleven months earlier.
But according to official records, he had died eleven months earlier as well.
"How is that possible?"" Margaret whispered.
Robert shook his head.
"Either the date of death was falsified, or someone used his identity after he died.""
Thomas leaned closer.
"There's only one way to find out.""
He pointed toward the third video.
Robert pressed play.
This time, the recording showed Daniel sitting with Vanessa in a hotel room.
Vanessa was holding a folder.
"I don't understand why you want to keep pretending Emily is your wife," she said.
Daniel laughed.
"Because she's useful.""
My chest tightened.
Vanessa continued.
"You promised me the company.""
"And you'll get it.""
"What about your mother?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"She'll sign whatever I put in front of her. She always has.""
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying silently.
The video continued.
Vanessa opened the folder.
"And Patricia?""
Daniel shrugged.
"Once the inheritance is transferred, we'll send her somewhere nobody can find her.""
I felt my hands go cold.
He wasn't simply hiding my mother.
He had been planning to make her disappear again.
Margaret stood up.
"That's enough.""
Robert paused the video.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret walked toward the window.
"I raised him better than this.""
I looked at her.
"Did you?""
She turned.
"Emily...""
"You knew he had stolen money before. You knew he was hiding things from me. You knew Richard had secrets. And every time, you protected him.""
Margaret lowered her head.
"You're right.""
Her answer surprised me.
She returned to the table.
"I spent my life trying to keep Daniel from becoming his father. Every time he made a mistake, I believed I could fix it before anyone got hurt.""
She looked directly at me.
"And every time I protected him, I made it easier for him to hurt you.""
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry.""
I didn't know whether I could forgive her.
But I believed she meant it.
Two days later, Robert filed emergency motions with the court.
The fraudulent property transfer was challenged.
The disputed loan was reported to the bank.
And the Bennett estate trustees suspended all pending distributions.
Daniel was summoned to appear before the estate's legal representatives.
He arrived wearing an expensive navy suit.
He looked confident.
Until he saw me sitting beside Margaret.
"Emily.""
I didn't respond.
He looked toward his mother.
"Mom, what is this?""
Margaret folded her hands.
"This is the end of your lies.""
Daniel laughed.
"You're really going to believe her over your own son?""
Margaret looked at him.
"I'm going to believe the documents.""
Robert placed the video transcripts on the table.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Where did you get those?""
"That doesn't matter," Robert replied.
Daniel turned toward me.
"Emily, listen. Vanessa has manipulated everyone. She stole documents, created fake accounts, and tried to blame me.""
I stared at him.
"Did you submit a death certificate saying I was dead?""
He went silent.
"Did you forge my signature on the property transfer?""
"Emily, I can explain.""
"Did you try to steal the inheritance my biological father left me?""
Daniel leaned back.
"You don't understand the business.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're right. I don't understand how a man can sleep beside his wife while secretly trying to erase her existence.""
His expression hardened.
"You're making a mistake.""
"No, Daniel. My mistake was trusting you.""
He looked toward Margaret.
"Mom, tell her to stop.""
Margaret stood.
"Don't call me for help anymore.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You can't be serious.""
"I have spent eight years watching you take advantage of Emily. I won't do it again.""
He slammed his hand against the table.
"Everything I did was for this family!""
Margaret's voice trembled.
"No. Everything you did was for yourself.""
The hearing was adjourned after Robert submitted the video evidence and the disputed documents.
But as we left the building, Daniel caught up with me.
He grabbed my arm.
"Emily, wait.""
I pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
His voice suddenly became desperate.
"Vanessa has something you don't know.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He glanced toward Margaret, then leaned closer.
"She wasn't just helping me transfer the inheritance. She was working with someone else.""
"Who?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Someone inside the Bennett family.""
Thomas, who had been walking behind us, stopped.
"That's impossible. I'm the only surviving member of Michael's immediate family.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Then you should ask yourself why Charles Whitmore was still alive when everyone believed he was dead.""
Thomas went pale.
I looked at Robert.
"Can he prove this?""
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a photograph.
It showed Charles Whitmore standing outside a private airport.
Beside him was a woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Patricia.
My mother.
But the date printed on the photograph was only three weeks earlier.
I turned toward her.
"Mom?""
She began crying.
"I can explain.""
Daniel smiled faintly.
For the first time since the mall, he looked almost victorious.
"Ask your mother where she was going.""
Patricia looked at me.
Then she whispered:
"I was going to meet the man who arranged your adoption.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"Charles Whitmore?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No.""
She pointed at Margaret.
"The man who arranged everything was Michael Bennett's brother.""
Thomas froze.
Patricia continued.
"And he wasn't trying to protect Emily's inheritance. He was trying to make sure she never discovered that Michael Bennett wasn't her biological father either.""
I looked at the photograph in my hands.
May you like
The story I had spent three days trying to understand had just opened another door.
And behind it was a secret that could change my entire identity once again.
