Chapter 8: The Family Secret
I spent the entire night searching through my grandmother’s old documents.
Not because I wanted answers.
Because I needed them.
The next morning, I drove to my childhood home where my mother still kept boxes from my grandmother’s estate.
The smell of old paper and cedar filled the basement.
My mother watched me carefully.
“Emily, what’s going on?””
I didn’t know how to explain it.
How do you tell your mother that the man you married might have been studying your family before he ever loved you?
“Ryan and I are having problems.””
Her face immediately changed.
“What kind of problems?””
I looked down.
“He cheated.””
The silence that followed hurt more than I expected.
My mother sat beside me.
“Oh, Emily.””
I wanted to cry.
But I didn’t.
Not anymore.
“I found out he hired someone to investigate me.””
My mother froze.
“What?””
“He was looking for something called the Carter family trust.””
Her expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That scared me.
“You know about it?””
She looked away.
“Your grandmother told me never to mention it.””
I stood.
“Why?””
My mother sighed.
“Because she believed people could be dangerous when money was involved.””
The words hit me.
“People like Ryan?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked to an old cabinet and pulled out a small wooden box.
The same kind my grandmother had held years ago.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
And a sealed envelope with my name on it.
Emily.
My mother touched my shoulder.
“She left that for you.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“She told me not to until you were ready.””
“Ready for what?””
My mother looked at me sadly.
“To know the truth.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My grandmother’s handwriting.
The first line made my heart stop.
*My dear Emily, if you are reading this, then someone has probably discovered what I spent years protecting.*
I kept reading.
She explained that my grandfather had created a private trust before his death.
A trust meant to protect family assets.
But the money was not the important part.
The important part was control.
The trust had strict rules.
Only direct descendants could access it.
And no spouse could claim ownership.
My breath caught.
Ryan.
He had known.
Or suspected.
My grandmother had protected me from exactly this.
I turned the page.
The final paragraph was shorter.
But it changed everything.
*There is one person who knows about this trust. Someone who helped create it. Be careful. Not everyone who loves you wants to protect you.*
I looked at my mother.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Your grandmother never told me.””
I looked back at the letter.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Ryan.
*I know you found the letter. We need to talk before you make a mistake.*
I stared at the screen.
He knew.
He knew I had found it.
But how?
I showed my mother.
Her face went pale.
“Emily…”
“What?””
She pointed at the message.
“Look at the time.””
I checked.
The message had been sent five minutes ago.
But I hadn’t told anyone where I was.
I hadn’t posted anything.
I hadn’t called Ryan.
Only one person knew I was searching through my grandmother’s things.
My blood turned cold.
“Someone told him.””
My mother slowly nodded.
And then I heard something outside.
A car door closing.
We both froze.
My mother whispered:
“Emily…”
I looked toward the basement stairs.
Someone was walking through the house.
May you like
Slowly.
Like they knew exactly where they were going.
