Chapter 12: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I drove to my mother’s house without telling anyone.

Not Sarah.

Not Daniel.

Not even my mother.

I needed to see her face when she explained everything.

Because I was tired of documents.

Tired of secrets.

Tired of discovering my own life through other people.

When I arrived, my mother was sitting at the kitchen table.

The same table where she had helped me with homework as a child.

The same place where she had told me everything would be okay.

Now she looked older.

Broken.

“Emily.””

I walked in.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

“No more protecting me.””

“I’m sorry.””

I sat across from her.

“How did my grandmother know Ryan?””

My mother looked at her hands.

“Because Ryan’s father worked with your grandfather.””

I froze.

“What?””

“They knew each other for decades.””

The room became silent.

“My grandmother knew his family?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she let me marry him?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“She didn’t.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She tried to warn you.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

My mother stood and walked to a cabinet.

She pulled out another envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Emily.

“I found this after your wedding.””

I looked at it.

“You had this the whole time?””

She nodded.

“Your grandmother wanted me to give it to you if something happened.””

My hands shook.

“Something like this?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

The letter was shorter.

But the first line destroyed me.

*Emily, if you married Ryan Carter, then I failed to protect you.*

I stopped reading.

My eyes filled.

My grandmother knew.

She knew something about Ryan.

I continued.

*I discovered that the Carter family has spent years searching for a way into our trust. I do not know if Ryan knows the full truth, but I know his family has interest in what belongs to you.*

I looked up.

“My grandmother knew.””

My mother nodded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She started crying.

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

I stared at her.

“You thought you could protect me?””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t.””

The words hurt both of us.

“I know.””

I looked back at the letter.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

And my blood ran cold.

*The person closest to Ryan may not be the person you suspect. Watch carefully. The most dangerous betrayal may come from someone who claims to love you.*

I looked at my mother.

Then Patricia.

Then Ryan.

Someone closest to Ryan.

Someone who claimed to love me.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Patricia.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*Emily, I need to tell you what Ryan did before he met you.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Because the woman he destroyed before you may be the reason he chose you.*

I felt a chill.

A woman before me.

Another victim.

Another secret.

And suddenly, I realized Ryan’s betrayal didn’t begin with me.

May you like

It began years earlier.

With someone else.
