Chapter 14: The Final Trap

The moment I left Claire’s apartment, I called Sarah.

She answered immediately.

“Emily?””

“I found Claire.””

A pause.

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

I got into my car.

“She has proof.””

Sarah’s voice became serious.

“Bring everything here.””

“I will.””

But before I could start the engine, my phone rang.

Ryan.

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“What do you want?””

His voice was quiet.

“Emily, I know you found Claire.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming his favorite weapon.

Silence.

“I’m done playing games, Ryan.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You listen.””

I took a breath.

“You never loved me.””

Silence.

“You studied me.””

“Emily—”

“You planned everything.””

“That’s not true.””

“You knew about my grandmother’s trust before our first date.””

A long pause.

And that pause was his confession.

Finally, Ryan said:

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

“You think I’m the villain.””

“I don’t think.””

I looked ahead.

“I know.””

His voice changed.

Anger returning.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“Neither did you.””

“What?””

“You forgot something.””

“What?””

I smiled slightly.

“You thought I was the same woman you manipulated for three years.””

Silence.

“But I’m not.””

I ended the call.

Then I noticed something.

A car behind me.

Black.

Following.

My heart raced.

I drove directly to Sarah’s office.

The car followed.

When I arrived, the car stopped.

A man stepped out.

Not Ryan.

Someone older.

Someone I recognized from old family photos.

My grandfather’s former business partner.

“Emily.””

I froze.

“How do you know me?””

He looked nervous.

“Because I helped create the trust.””

Everything inside me went still.

“What?””

He walked closer.

“Your grandmother asked me to protect it.””

“Then why is everyone trying to take it?””

His expression changed.

“Because someone inside the family betrayed her.””

I thought of my mother.

Patricia.

Ryan.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He glanced toward the street.

“Ryan never had enough power to do this alone.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“You don’t.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at Sarah’s building.

“Someone has been feeding Ryan information from the beginning.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“Your grandmother left this for the day you discovered the truth.””

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

One sentence.

And the handwriting was unmistakable.

*Emily, the person you trust most is the person who knows the most.*

I looked up.

The man was gone.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Sarah.

*Emily, I need you to come upstairs immediately.*

I ran inside.

When I reached her office, Sarah was standing beside her computer.

Her face was pale.

“What happened?””

She turned the screen toward me.

An email was open.

Sent five minutes earlier.

The sender name was hidden.

But the message was clear.

*She found Claire. Begin the final step.*

Below it was an attachment.

A photograph.

I clicked it.

And my blood froze.

It was a picture of me.

Taken that morning.

Outside Claire’s apartment.

May you like

Someone had been watching me.

Someone close enough to see everything.
