Chapter 3: The Papers on the Table
The silence after my question was heavier than any scream Ryan had thrown at me.
Nobody looked at Jessica.
Nobody looked at Patricia.
Everyone looked at Ryan.
Because for the first time, they saw the same thing I had seen for months.
A man who was confident only when he believed he had control.
Ryan swallowed.
“You’re twisting things.””
I almost smiled.
It was always the same.
Every lie had the same beginning.
Denial.
“You don’t understand real estate,” he said.
I walked back toward the dining table.
“I understand enough.””
I placed my phone down.
“The deed is in my name. The mortgage is in my name. The insurance is in my name.””
Ryan stared at the screen.
“You never told me.””
I looked at him.
“You never asked.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
Because it was true.
Ryan had never been interested in the details of our life.
Only the benefits.
When we moved into the house, he invited his friends over and gave tours.
He showed them the kitchen.
The backyard.
The home theater.
He said, “We built this place.””
But every contractor had called me.
Every bill had gone through my account.
Every decision had been mine.
Ryan just enjoyed the applause.
Patricia picked up her wine glass again.
“You’re being cruel.””
I turned toward her.
“Cruel?””
“Yes.””
She sighed.
“Marriage is about forgiveness.””
I stared at her.
“Is that what you told yourself when you found out he was sleeping with Jessica?””
Jessica looked uncomfortable.
Patricia’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
And I saw it.
The answer.
“You knew.””
Ryan immediately stepped forward.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“Let her answer.””
Patricia looked away.
That was all I needed.
“You knew,” I whispered.
She finally spoke.
“I knew he was unhappy.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Unhappy?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“You were always focused on work. You weren’t giving him enough attention.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So your solution was for him to betray me?””
“No one said that.””
“You didn’t stop him.””
Silence.
Jessica looked down.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No,” I said.
“This is the truth.””
I picked up my suitcase.
This time, Ryan didn’t reach for me.
He didn’t yell.
Because the power he thought he had was disappearing.
“Emily,” he said quietly.
I stopped.
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Worried.
“We can talk about this.””
I looked back.
“Now you want to talk?””
“Yes.””
“You didn’t want to talk when I asked why you were hiding your phone.””
Ryan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
“You didn’t want to talk when I asked why Jessica knew things about your schedule before I did.””
His face tightened.
“You didn’t want to talk when you were lying beside me every night.””
I walked closer.
“And you definitely didn’t want to talk before you hit me.””
His expression changed.
For a moment, I saw regret.
But then Jessica stood.
“Ryan, we should leave.””
Everyone turned.
The confidence in her voice surprised me.
She looked at Ryan like she expected him to choose her.
And maybe he would have.
Before tonight.
Ryan looked between us.
His wife.
His affair partner.
His family.
Then his eyes stopped on me.
“Emily…”
I waited.
But before he could finish, my phone rang.
The screen lit up.
I looked down.
It was my attorney.
Ryan noticed the name.
And his face went pale.
“Attorney?””
I answered.
“Hello?””
A calm voice came through the speaker.
“Emily, I received your message. I’ve reviewed the documents you sent.””
I turned slightly away from everyone.
“Yes?””
There was a pause.
Then my attorney said something that made Ryan step backward.
“Your husband has no legal claim to the property. But there’s something else you need to know.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What is it?””
The room became completely silent.
Then the voice on the other end said:
“We found evidence that Ryan has been hiding another financial account connected to the house.””
I looked at Ryan.
His face had changed.
He knew.
He knew exactly what they had found.
And suddenly, throwing me out wasn’t the biggest mistake he had made that night.
Because Ryan hadn’t just cheated on me.
He had been preparing to steal from me.
May you like
And he had left a trail of evidence behind.
