Chapter 10: The Lie Beneath the Lie

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Patricia.

Not my mother.

Not me.

The basement suddenly felt smaller.

Colder.

I looked at my mother standing beside the old wooden boxes that held my grandmother’s memories.

The woman who had comforted me after every heartbreak.

The woman who had told me to trust my instincts.

The woman who had just watched me discover that my husband wanted to steal from me.

And now Patricia was saying she was part of the reason.

“No,” I whispered.

My mother’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Patricia, don’t.””

Those two words were enough.

Because my mother wasn’t denying it.

I looked at her.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“Emily…”

My chest tightened.

“How long have you known?””

My mother looked down.

“Known what?””

I laughed quietly.

“Don’t do that.””

The room went silent.

“Not now.””

Patricia stepped closer.

“Your mother has been keeping secrets for years.””

My mother turned toward her.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

That stopped me.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t about Ryan.

It was bigger.

Older.

A secret that existed before my marriage.

Before Jessica.

Before the house.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Neither woman answered.

I raised my voice.

“What happened?””

My mother sat down slowly.

Her hands were trembling.

“Your grandmother was afraid.””

“Of what?””

My mother looked at the letter in my hand.

“Of losing everything she built.””

I stared.

“She built that trust to protect me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Patricia say she didn’t trust you?””

My mother looked at Patricia.

A painful silence passed between them.

Finally, my mother spoke.

“Because I made a mistake.””

My stomach dropped.

“What kind of mistake?””

She swallowed.

“A long time ago, I borrowed money from the family trust.””

I froze.

“How much?””

“Not much.””

I looked at her.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Enough.””

Patricia crossed her arms.

“That money was supposed to stay untouched.””

“And I paid it back.””

“But the damage was done,” Patricia said.

I turned toward her.

“You knew about this?””

Patricia nodded.

“Your grandmother told me.””

“And you used it against my mother?””

“No.””

Her voice became defensive.

“I used it to understand why your grandmother changed the trust rules.””

I looked at the letter again.

My grandmother’s warning.

*Not everyone who loves you wants to protect you.*

I thought I understood it.

I was wrong.

My mother reached for my hand.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””

The pain on her face hurt me.

But I couldn’t ignore the truth.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had explanations.

And somehow, I was always the last person to know.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Sarah.

*Emily, we found something else about Ryan’s financial records. You need to see this immediately.*

I looked up.

“I have to go.””

My mother stood.

“Emily—”

“I need answers.””

I wasn’t running away.

I was finally running toward the truth.

Sarah was waiting when I arrived.

She had several documents spread across her desk.

“Something happened,” she said.

“What?””

She pointed at a bank statement.

“Ryan wasn’t just moving money.””

I looked closer.

“What is this?””

“A transfer.””

“Where?””

Sarah looked at me.

“To an account connected to your mother.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the document.

“No.””

“I know what it looks like.””

“It’s not possible.””

Sarah didn’t respond.

Because she knew.

Sometimes the worst part of betrayal wasn’t discovering the truth.

It was realizing the truth was exactly what you feared.

I picked up the paper.

The account holder name was partially hidden.

But enough was visible.

A family trust account.

And beneath it…

My mother’s name.

My hands started shaking.

Ryan.

My mother.

The trust.

The money.

Everything was connected.

But why?

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emily, this is Daniel.””

I stepped away from the desk.

“What happened?””

His voice sounded urgent.

“I found the original documents from Ryan’s investigation.””

“Original?””

“Yes.””

“Sarah already has the report.””

“No.””

A pause.

“The report you saw was edited.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Emily, Ryan didn’t investigate your finances.””

I frowned.

“Then what did he investigate?””

Daniel’s answer was barely a whisper.

“He was investigating who else knew about the trust.””

I looked at the papers on Sarah’s desk.

My mother’s name.

Ryan’s hidden accounts.

The secret trust.

Then Daniel said:

“And Emily…”

“What?””

“He wasn’t looking for a way to take your money.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was looking for someone who could help him unlock it.””
