Chapter 7: The File He Hid

I stared at the investigator’s report on Sarah’s computer screen.

My name.

My address.

My entire history.

Ryan had paid someone to dig into my life.

Not because he loved me.

Not because he was worried about me.

Because he was preparing.

“Open it,” I whispered.

Sarah hesitated.

“Emily, are you sure?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She clicked the file.

A scanned document appeared.

The first page contained basic information.

My birth date.

My previous addresses.

My employment history.

Nothing unusual.

Then Sarah scrolled down.

And stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“There’s something here.””

I leaned closer.

The next section was labeled:

*Financial Background.*

My stomach tightened.

“He was looking into my inheritance.””

Sarah nodded.

“But there’s more.””

She clicked another page.

A note from the investigator appeared.

*Subject may have access to additional assets unknown to spouse. Further investigation recommended.*

I frowned.

“Additional assets?””

I didn’t understand.

My grandmother had left me money.

That was all.

The house.

The savings.

The investments.

Everything had been documented.

Sarah kept reading.

Then her expression changed.

“Emily…”

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

There was a handwritten note attached to the report.

A note Ryan had requested.

*Find out if Emily knows about the Carter family trust.*

My entire body went cold.

“The Carter family trust?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Do you know what that is?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But as soon as I said it, a memory surfaced.

A conversation with my grandmother years ago.

She had been sitting in her garden, holding an old wooden box.

I was twenty-three.

She told me, “One day, you may discover that our family has protected something for generations.””

At the time, I laughed.

I thought she was talking about old jewelry.

Old photographs.

Family memories.

I never imagined she meant something else.

Sarah noticed my expression.

“You remembered something.””

I slowly nodded.

“My grandmother said something strange before she died.””

“What did she say?””

I looked at the report again.

“She said our family protected something.””

Sarah sat back.

“Did Ryan know?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But suddenly, I remembered.

Our first year of marriage.

Ryan asking questions.

Too many questions.

“How much did your grandmother leave you?””

“Did she have other investments?””

“Are you sure there isn’t anything else?””

Back then, I thought he was curious.

Now I wondered if he was searching.

Sarah closed the report.

“Emily, we need to find out what this trust is.””

“How?””

“Your grandmother’s estate records.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Ryan.

I stared at his name.

Sarah watched me.

“Don’t answer.””

But I did.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Ryan spoke.

His voice was softer than before.

“Emily.””

I said nothing.

“I know you’re angry.””

I almost laughed.

Angry.

That was the word he chose.

Not hurt.

Not betrayed.

Angry.

“You hit me.””

A pause.

“I know.””

“You threw me out of my own house.””

“I was upset.””

“You cheated on me.””

Another pause.

Then he said the words I expected.

“I made a mistake.””

I closed my eyes.

“No, Ryan.””

“Emily—”

“You made thousands of choices.””

Silence.

Every lie.

Every message.

Every hidden payment.

Every document.

Thousands of choices.

“I want to fix this,” he said.

I looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

“What do you want from me?”” I asked.

“I want to meet.””

“Why?””

“Because there are things you don’t know.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What things?””

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

Because Ryan was never quiet unless he was choosing his words carefully.

Finally, he said:

“Things about your grandmother.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Sarah’s expression became serious.

“What did he say?””

I looked up.

“He knows about the trust.””

And for the first time since I discovered his affair, I felt something stronger than anger.

Fear.

Because Ryan wasn’t just fighting for my house.

He was fighting for something much bigger.

May you like

Something my grandmother had hidden from everyone.

Including me.
