Chapter 6: The Battle Begins

When I walked into my attorney’s office, the first thing I saw was Ryan’s paperwork spread across the desk.

Pages.

Signatures.

Claims.

Lies printed in black and white.

My attorney, Sarah, looked up.

“Emily, sit down.””

I did.

“What did he file?””

She pushed the documents toward me.

“Ryan is claiming that the house was marital property because he contributed financially.””

I almost laughed.

“He contributed?””

Sarah nodded.

“He listed several payments.””

I looked at the numbers.

Then I saw it.

Small transfers.

Monthly deposits.

Payments that had come from our joint account.

The same account funded mostly by me.

“He’s trying to make it look like he paid for the house.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Can he do that?””

“Not successfully if the records prove otherwise.””

Not successfully.

Those words mattered.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

Ryan was used to winning because nobody challenged him.

He counted on people giving up.

But I wasn’t the woman who had stood silently at the dinner table anymore.

Sarah opened another file.

“There’s also the assault.””

I looked down.

My fingers touched my cheek.

The pain had faded.

But the memory hadn’t.

“He will deny it.””

“I know.””

“Then why include it?””

“Because behavior matters.””

Sarah looked at me.

“And because we have witnesses.””

I thought about Patricia.

His father.

Jessica.

Everyone had seen.

Ryan had spent years believing his charm protected him.

That night, everyone saw behind it.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

I expected anger.

Instead, it said:

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I showed Sarah.

She shook her head.

“Do not meet him without documentation.””

“I wasn’t planning to.””

Another message appeared.

*Please. I made a mistake. I love you.*

I stared at the words.

Love.

That word used to mean everything.

Now it felt empty.

I typed a response.

*You don’t love me. You love what I provided.*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Sarah looked at me.

“Are you okay?””

I thought about the woman I had been twenty-four hours earlier.

A wife.

A homeowner.

Someone who believed loyalty mattered.

Then I thought about the woman I was becoming.

Someone who finally understood her own worth.

“I’m better than okay.””

Sarah smiled slightly.

“Good.””

She closed the file.

“Because this is going to get complicated.””

“How complicated?””

She looked at the paperwork.

“Ryan has been preparing this for a long time.””

I looked at the fake signature again.

“How long?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Long enough that I think we need to investigate everything.””

That afternoon, we started reviewing every account connected to Ryan.

Every transfer.

Every document.

Every hidden expense.

And then we found something.

A payment.

A large payment.

Made three months before Ryan’s affair became obvious.

The recipient name wasn’t Jessica.

It wasn’t a business.

It was a private investigator.

I stared at the screen.

“Why would Ryan hire a private investigator?””

Sarah leaned closer.

“I don’t know.””

I felt a chill move through me.

Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.

Ryan wasn’t just planning to take my house.

He had been watching me.

Tracking me.

Preparing for something.

Sarah clicked open the payment details.

Then her expression changed.

“Emily…”

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

The description line was short.

But it explained everything.

*“Background investigation — Emily Carter.””*

My heart stopped.

Ryan hadn’t been waiting for me to discover his betrayal.

He had been preparing for me to fight back.

And whatever he had found about me…

He clearly believed it was powerful enough to destroy me.
