Chapter 11: The Missing Piece

I couldn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ryan’s face.

Not when he hit me.

Not when he threw me out.

But earlier.

The first year we were married.

The way he looked at me when he thought I wasn’t watching.

The way he asked questions about my family.

The way he wanted to know everything.

I used to think that was love.

Now I wondered if it was research.

The next morning, Sarah and I met Daniel in her office.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“This is everything I found.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you helping me?””

He hesitated.

“Because I helped Ryan hide things.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Not intentionally.””

He opened the folder.

“Ryan asked me to review some documents. He said he was planning for his future.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know he was trying to manipulate you.””

Sarah opened the first document.

“What did you find?””

Daniel pointed.

“Ryan needed three things.””

He held up one finger.

“Proof that he had a financial connection to you.””

A second finger.

“Access to trust information.””

A third.

“And someone inside your family willing to cooperate.””

I immediately thought of my mother.

But Daniel shook his head.

“Not your mother.””

I looked at him.

“Then who?””

He turned the page.

A name appeared.

My heart dropped.

Patricia Carter.

Ryan’s mother.

I stared.

“She was helping him?””

“Yes.””

Sarah frowned.

“Then why did she accuse Emily’s mother?””

Daniel leaned back.

“Because that was the distraction.””

Everything went silent.

I felt something break inside.

Patricia had come to my house.

She had looked me in the eyes.

She had acted like she was protecting her son because she loved him.

But she wasn’t protecting him.

She was protecting herself.

“What did she want?””

Daniel pointed at another document.

“She wanted access to the trust.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan couldn’t access it directly.””

I looked confused.

“Why not?””

“Because the trust has restrictions.””

Sarah nodded.

“Spouses are excluded.””

Exactly.

Ryan couldn’t touch it.

Not unless someone helped him.

I stood up.

“So my entire marriage was a plan.””

Nobody answered.

They didn’t need to.

The evidence was sitting in front of me.

Years of lies.

Years of pretending.

Sarah looked at me.

“Emily, there’s something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

She slid another document forward.

“This was found in Ryan’s email.””

I read the subject line.

My hands went cold.

*Project Emily.*

I opened it.

Inside were notes.

Dates.

Plans.

And one sentence that made me feel sick.

*Once Emily transfers control of the trust after marriage, the process will be complete.*

I covered my mouth.

He never loved me.

The thought hurt more than I expected.

Not because I still loved him.

Because I had spent years loving someone who never existed.

My phone rang.

This time, it was my mother.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Emily, you need to listen to me.””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Your grandmother didn’t just leave you a trust.””

I waited.

“She left you evidence.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Evidence of what?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Evidence that Ryan’s family has been trying to take it for years.””

I looked at Sarah.

Then Daniel.

“Mom…”

She continued.

“And Emily…”

“Yes?””

“Your grandmother knew Ryan’s family would come after you.””

A chill moved through me.

“How?””

May you like

My mother answered:

“Because she knew Ryan before you did.””
