Chapter 4: The Hidden Account
“Ryan has been moving money from the household account into a separate account under a different name,” my attorney said.
The room felt like it had tilted.
I stared at my husband.
The same man who had just screamed at me.
The same man who had grabbed my hair.
The same man who had looked me in the eyes and told me I was nothing in a house I paid for.
He looked terrified.
“Emily,” Ryan said quickly, “don’t listen to her. She’s trying to scare you.””
I covered the phone with my hand.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You knew exactly what she was talking about.””
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
A few seconds of silence said more than any confession could.
My attorney’s voice came through again.
“Emily, I need you to step somewhere private if possible.””
I looked toward the front door.
“I’m leaving now.””
Ryan stepped in front of me.
“No.””
The single word made everyone freeze.
I looked at him.
“No?””
His eyes flickered.
He realized how that sounded.
“You can’t just walk away and destroy my life.””
I almost laughed.
“Your life?””
My voice became quiet.
“Ryan, you destroyed your own life the moment you decided hurting me was easier than admitting the truth.””
His father looked at him with disappointment.
“Ryan, what account is she talking about?””
Ryan turned.
“Dad, stay out of this.””
His father’s face hardened.
“No. You brought all of us into this.””
For years, I had thought Ryan’s father was the difficult one.
The quiet one.
The man who never expressed emotion.
But standing there, I realized something.
He wasn’t cruel.
He was just finally seeing his son clearly.
I walked into the hallway and answered my attorney again.
“Sorry. I’m still at the house.””
“Emily, based on the documents we found, Ryan appears to have transferred funds from accounts connected to your marriage.””
“How much?””
There was a pause.
A pause that made my stomach drop.
“Approximately eighty-seven thousand dollars.””
I closed my eyes.
Eighty-seven thousand.
Money I had saved.
Money I had planned to use for renovations.
Money I had trusted him with because I believed we were building a future together.
Behind me, I heard Ryan’s voice.
“Don’t tell her everything.””
I slowly turned around.
Nobody spoke.
Jessica looked at him.
“What did you say?””
Ryan’s face changed.
He had forgotten she was there.
I watched Jessica’s expression shift from confidence to confusion.
“You told me you owned this house.””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“You told me Emily was just trying to take everything from you.””
Still nothing.
Jessica looked at me.
“You knew?””
I stared at her.
“I knew he was lying.””
Her face went pale.
“But not about the money.””
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Jessica, don’t do this.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Don’t do this?””
She pointed at him.
“You told me you were leaving her.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Jessica shook her head.
“Oh my God.””
Patricia stood up.
“Jessica, calm down.””
But Jessica looked at her.
“You knew too?””
That was the first time all evening Patricia looked uncomfortable.
The perfect family image was collapsing.
Not because I destroyed it.
Because the truth finally walked into the room.
I ended the call with my attorney and put my phone away.
Ryan watched me carefully.
“What are you going to do?””
The question surprised me.
Not because he asked.
Because he sounded afraid.
A week ago, I would have cried hearing that fear in his voice.
Tonight, I felt nothing.
“I’m going to protect myself.””
He shook his head.
“You’re really going to throw away our marriage over this?””
I stared at him.
“Our marriage?””
I stepped closer.
“You threw away our marriage when you brought another woman into it.””
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying the wrong thing during an argument.””
I pointed toward my cheek.
“What you did was a choice.””
Nobody spoke.
I picked up my suitcase.
This time, nobody stopped me.
At the doorway, I turned around.
“I’ll have my attorney contact you.””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“Emily, don’t do this.””
I opened the door.
The cold night air touched my face.
And for the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe.
But as I stepped outside, my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the first line.
May you like
And my entire body went still.
*“Emily, if you want to know why Ryan married you, you need to see what I found.””*
