Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Plan

The word echoed in my head.

Emma.

Not my money.

Not my company.

My daughter.

I walked outside because I couldn’t breathe inside the house anymore.

The morning air felt cold against my face.

“Rachel,” I said into the phone, “start talking.””

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to explain this like you’re the victim.””

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

I looked back through the window.

Vanessa was sitting at the table.

Jason stood beside her.

Everyone looked exhausted.

“But Michael was planning something much bigger.””

“What?””

“He wanted custody of Emma.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Michael has been building a case against you.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“A case against me?””

“He wanted to make you look unstable. Absent. Dangerous.””

I laughed.

“Dangerous?””

“He recorded arguments. He collected messages. He told people you were obsessed with work and never home.””

I looked toward the house.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The cameras.

The recordings.

The manipulation.

He wasn’t just spying.

He was building a story.

My story.

A fake version of my life.

“Why?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“Because he wanted Emma.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why would he want my daughter?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because of his past.””

I waited.

“Michael had a daughter.””

I frowned.

“Had?””

“She died.””

The anger in me stopped for a second.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I realized there was something broken inside him.

“What happened?””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“She died years ago in an accident. After that, Michael became obsessed with having another family.””

“That’s insane.””

“Yes.””

She whispered the word.

“It is.””

I looked at the sky.

“And Vanessa?””

“She knew.””

My jaw tightened.

“She knew everything?””

“Not at first.””

Rachel explained.

“Michael approached her because he knew she was unhappy.””

I closed my eyes.

Unhappy.

That word felt like an insult.

Vanessa had been unhappy while I was working to build a future for us.

“He convinced her that you didn’t care.””

I looked through the window again.

Vanessa looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

“He told her that if she helped him prove you were an unfit father, she could start over.””

“And she believed him.””

Rachel was silent.

That was answer enough.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Michael.

*You should stop digging.*

Another message came seconds later.

*You don’t know what your wife has done.*

Then another.

*Ask her about the adoption papers.*

My blood ran cold.

Adoption papers?

I looked at Vanessa.

She noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I walked back inside.

“Did you adopt Emma?””

The color drained from her face.

“What?””

“Answer me.””

Jason looked between us.

Vanessa stood slowly.

“Why are you asking that?””

“Because Michael told me to.””

Her face changed.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“Find out what?””

She looked at Emma’s empty bedroom upstairs.

Then back at me.

“Daniel…”

Her voice shook.

“Emma isn’t your biological daughter.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“No.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When?””

“Never.””

That hurt more than the words themselves.

I stepped backward.

All these years.

All the nights I stayed awake when Emma had nightmares.

All the moments I held her hand.

All the times she called me Daddy.

None of it changed.

But suddenly, the truth felt like a weapon.

Vanessa reached for me.

“Daniel, please.””

I moved away.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was Rachel.

I answered.

Her voice was frantic.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“What now?””

“Michael knows I contacted you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He’s coming for Emma.””

I looked upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

Empty.

Then I heard Jason shout from the hallway.

“Daniel!””

I turned.

His face was white.

He was holding his phone.

“What?””

May you like

He swallowed.

“Emma is gone.””
