Chapter 10: The Truth Before Emma
I stared at the sentence in Emma’s notebook.
*The truth about what happened before I became your daughter.*
For a moment, I forgot everything else.
The old house.
The broken windows.
The fear.
All I could see was my daughter’s handwriting.
Small letters.
Uneven lines.
A child trying to explain something she never should have carried alone.
I looked at Emma.
“Sweetheart, what does Uncle Michael mean?””
She hugged the notebook tightly.
“He said you didn’t know everything.””
My throat tightened.
“Know what?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then away.
“Mommy told me never to talk about it.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Emma…”
My daughter flinched.
That one movement broke something inside me.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Not this time.””
She stopped.
“Daniel.””
“No more secrets.””
The room became silent.
Emma looked between us.
“I’m sorry.””
I immediately dropped beside her.
“Hey.””
I held her face gently.
“Never say sorry for telling Daddy the truth.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But Mommy said if people knew, they would take me away.””
I felt anger rise.
Not the kind that made me reckless.
The kind that made me understand exactly what I had to do.
“Who told you that?””
Emma whispered:
“Mommy.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Jason looked away.
Even Rachel, who had arrived with the police after tracking my phone location, stood frozen by the doorway.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
She cried silently for a moment.
Then she finally spoke.
“Emma wasn’t supposed to know.””
“Know what?””
Vanessa looked down.
“The adoption.””
The word landed heavily.
I already knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
“When did you find out?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Before we got married.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“My sister gave birth to Emma.””
I felt the room shift.
“Your sister?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“She was young. She couldn’t take care of her. She asked me to adopt her.””
I looked at Emma.
My daughter.
Not by blood.
By every moment that mattered.
By every bedtime story.
Every scraped knee.
Every nightmare.
Every “I love you, Daddy.””
“So why hide it?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would leave.””
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“You thought I would stop loving her because she wasn’t mine?””
Vanessa couldn’t answer.
Because she knew.
The truth was obvious.
I would have loved Emma no matter what.
I already did.
Then Rachel spoke.
“She’s not telling you everything.””
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel stepped inside.
“Michael knew about the adoption.””
I turned.
“How?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“Because I told him.””
My anger returned.
“You?””
Rachel nodded.
“I was trying to find a way to stop him.””
I stared at her.
“By giving him information?””
“I made a mistake.””
“That mistake almost destroyed my family.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
Emma suddenly spoke.
“Uncle Michael said Mommy wasn’t my real mommy.””
Vanessa broke down.
“Emma…”
“He said Daddy would leave if he knew.””
My fists tightened.
Michael hadn’t just manipulated adults.
He had used a child’s biggest fear.
Being abandoned.
I looked around the room.
“Where is Michael?””
The police officer standing near the door answered.
“He left before we arrived.””
My heart sank.
“Of course he did.””
Then Emma grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
I looked at her.
“He left something.””
“What?””
She opened her notebook.
A small folded paper fell out.
I picked it up.
Three words were written on it.
*CHECK THE BASEMENT.*
My stomach tightened.
“This house has a basement?””
The officer nodded.
“According to records, yes.””
We followed the stairs down.
The basement was dark.
Cold air moved through the room.
At the bottom, I saw boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Photos.
Documents.
Files.
Michael had been collecting information for years.
Jason picked up one folder.
“Daniel.””
I looked over.
His face was pale.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
Inside were pictures of Emma.
Not recent pictures.
Pictures from when she was a baby.
Pictures from our home.
Pictures only someone close to us could have taken.
Then I saw another file.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
Inside was a detailed plan.
Dates.
Names.
Evidence.
And one final page.
A custody agreement.
Already signed.
Except my signature wasn’t mine.
I stared at the fake signature.
Then I saw the date.
May you like
The date Michael planned to take Emma away.
Tomorrow.
