Chapter 4: The Name on the Photograph

The name written on the back of the photograph made my hands go numb.

I read it three times, hoping my eyes were playing tricks on me.

*Michael Carter.*

My old business partner.

My best friend for eight years.

The man who had stood beside me when I opened my first company.

The man who had held Emma as a newborn and joked that he would be the “fun uncle” who spoiled her with toys.

The same man Vanessa had always called “family.””

I dropped the photograph onto the kitchen counter.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Because my mind refused to connect the pieces.

Michael?

Impossible.

I grabbed my phone and called him.

Straight to voicemail.

I called again.

Nothing.

My chest tightened.

A person can ignore a phone call.

But they can’t ignore the truth forever.

I grabbed my keys and drove to my brother Jason’s house.

Emma was sitting on the couch coloring when I walked in.

The second she saw me, she smiled.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward me.

I caught her and held her tightly.

For a few seconds, I forgot about the cameras.

The lies.

The betrayal.

I just held my daughter.

Jason watched from the doorway.

“Did you find something?””

I nodded slowly.

“More than I wanted.””

That evening, after Emma went to sleep, I showed Jason the photograph.

He stared at the name.

“Michael?””

“Do you know another Michael Carter?””

Jason shook his head.

“No.””

Neither of us spoke.

Because sometimes silence says the thing you’re too afraid to admit.

Jason poured himself a drink.

“Daniel, how sure are you that Vanessa and Michael…”

I cut him off.

“I don’t know.””

That was the hardest part.

I didn’t know.

The woman I had shared my life with had become a stranger in front of me.

The man I trusted most had become a question mark.

Jason looked at me.

“You need proof before you do anything.””

“I know.””

“Not because Vanessa deserves protection.””

I looked up.

“Then why?””

“Because Emma does.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because he was right.

I wasn’t fighting for my marriage anymore.

I was fighting for my daughter.

The next morning, I went back to the house.

I didn’t call Vanessa.

I didn’t warn her.

I wanted to see what she would do when she thought nobody was watching.

The front door was unlocked.

I stepped inside quietly.

The house felt different.

Not empty.

Abandoned.

Like someone had already decided they were leaving.

I walked into the kitchen.

The broken plate from the night before was gone.

The floor was clean.

Too clean.

Then I heard voices upstairs.

Vanessa.

And someone else.

A man.

My entire body froze.

I moved closer.

The office door was slightly open.

Michael stood inside.

My heart stopped.

He looked exactly the same.

The same expensive suit.

The same confident smile.

The same man everyone trusted.

Vanessa was standing across from him.

“You said everything was handled,” she whispered.

Michael looked annoyed.

“It was supposed to be.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel came home early.””

Vanessa ran her hand through her hair.

“You said the camera would never be found.””

Michael stepped closer.

“You should have made sure Emma didn’t talk.””

My blood turned cold.

I pushed the door open.

“What did you just say?””

Both of them turned.

Vanessa’s face went white.

Michael didn’t move.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Michael smiled.

“Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“You.””

He sighed.

“Let me explain.””

I laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“Explain what? The camera? My daughter eating from the dog’s tray? The fact that you’re standing in my house while my wife looks terrified?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can fix this.””

“You had months to fix it.””

Michael crossed his arms.

“You’re making emotional decisions.””

I looked at him.

“Emotional?””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“My five-year-old daughter was afraid to tell me she was hungry.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation.

Only excuses.

I stepped closer.

“Why did you put cameras in my house?””

Vanessa looked at Michael.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

I saw the truth.

They weren’t partners.

They were afraid of each other.

Michael looked away.

And that’s when I knew.

He was hiding something from Vanessa too.

I pulled out my phone.

“I recorded everything.””

Vanessa froze.

Michael’s face changed.

“You didn’t.””

I smiled for the first time in days.

“Yes.””

Michael stepped toward me.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

I held up the phone.

“Actually, I think I finally do.””

Then Michael’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

Fear.

Real fear.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face went pale.

“What do you mean she knows?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Who knows?””

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And the next words he said made my blood run cold.

“Emma knows who really put the camera there.””
