Chapter 14: The Last Lie
When I returned home, Vanessa knew immediately.
She saw my face.
She knew I had learned something.
“What did he tell you?””
I didn’t answer.
I placed the hospital records on the table.
Her expression changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Daniel…”
“Who is Emma’s father?””
The silence was unbearable.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
I had seen her cry many times.
But this was different.
This was the face of someone who knew the end had arrived.
“You don’t understand.””
I laughed softly.
“I’m starting to understand everything.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
I pointed at the papers.
“Was he alive?””
Her eyes closed.
That was the answer.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And then she said the name.
A name I never expected.
“Michael.””
I felt numb.
No anger.
No shock.
Just emptiness.
Michael.
The man who destroyed my life.
The man who watched my family.
The man who wanted my daughter.
Was Emma’s biological father.
I stepped backward.
“How?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Before I met you, my sister was with Michael.””
I listened.
“She had Lily first. Then Emma.””
“Why didn’t she raise them?””
“Because Michael was dangerous.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“He became obsessed with controlling everything.””
She told me about the years before I entered their lives.
The fights.
The threats.
The fear.
Her sister eventually left.
But she could only take one child.
Emma stayed.
Lily disappeared into the system.
And Vanessa made a choice.
A terrible one.
She adopted Emma.
But she also hid the truth.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I knew you would ask questions.””
“And?””
“And I was afraid you would find out everything.””
I stared at her.
“You built our marriage on lies.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe Emma was mine.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She is yours.””
I stopped.
Because that sentence was true.
Biology was never what made me her father.
But the lies still hurt.
Then Emma appeared.
She had been listening.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned.
She looked scared.
Not because of the truth.
Because of the tension.
I walked to her.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“Are you still my daddy?””
My heart broke.
I knelt down.
“Emma.””
I held her hands.
“You could have been born on another planet, and I would still be your daddy.””
She smiled through tears.
“Really?””
“Really.””
She hugged me.
And I held her longer than ever before.
Later that night, I sat alone.
Thinking about everything.
Vanessa’s betrayal.
Michael’s obsession.
Rachel’s mistakes.
But one thing was clear.
The children were the victims.
Not Emma.
Not Lily.
They didn’t choose any of this.
The next morning, I received a call from the detective.
“Daniel.””
His voice was serious.
“We found something else in Michael’s files.””
I stood.
“What?””
“A recording.””
“Of what?””
A pause.
Then:
“The day Emma was born.””
My heart stopped.
“Why would he record that?””
“We don’t know.””
“Send it.””
A few minutes later, the file arrived.
I opened it.
The audio was old.
Distorted.
But the voices were clear.
Michael.
Vanessa’s sister.
And a baby crying.
Then a sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
Michael’s voice:
“She can’t know the truth.””
The woman replied:
“What about Daniel?””
Michael answered:
“He can never know he’s not just raising Emma.””
I leaned closer.
Then came the final words.
Words that made my entire body freeze.
“She’s not the only child I fathered.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Because Michael had one more secret.
One more child.
And suddenly, I understood.
May you like
Lily wasn’t the end of the story.
She was only the beginning.
