Chapter 12: The Child Michael Hid

I couldn’t speak.

The voice on the phone repeated itself.

“Daddy?””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

A small sob.

Then silence.

The call ended.

I looked at the detective.

“Trace it.””

He immediately moved.

Jason stood beside me.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another life damaged by Michael.

The detective returned minutes later.

“We have a location.””

Everyone moved.

The address was an abandoned apartment building across town.

A place that had been empty for years.

When we arrived, police surrounded the building.

I kept thinking about Emma.

About how scared she must have been in Michael’s house.

About another child possibly feeling the same fear.

We entered the apartment on the third floor.

The door was unlocked.

Inside was a small room.

A bed.

A table.

Children’s books.

A stuffed rabbit.

My heart sank.

Someone had been living there.

Then I heard it.

A quiet sound.

Crying.

I followed it.

Behind a closed door was a little girl.

Maybe six years old.

She was sitting on the floor.

Holding a photograph.

When she saw me, she froze.

“You’re not him.””

I knelt down.

“No.””

She hugged the stuffed rabbit tighter.

“Where is Michael?””

I swallowed.

“He’s gone.””

The girl looked afraid.

“He said he would come back.””

“What’s your name?””

“Lily.””

I kept my voice gentle.

“Lily, who is Michael to you?””

She looked at the photograph in her hand.

Then whispered:

“He said he was my daddy.””

The words hit me.

I looked at the picture.

Michael.

Holding a baby.

A woman beside him.

The detective examined it.

“This changes everything.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He showed me a file found on the table.

A birth certificate.

Michael’s name was listed.

But the mother’s name was familiar.

Vanessa’s sister.

The same woman who had given birth to Emma.

My mind struggled to understand.

Two children.

One connection.

Michael wasn’t trying to take Emma because of obsession alone.

There was a deeper reason.

I looked at Lily.

“Do you know Emma?””

She nodded.

“She’s my sister.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the entire world stopped.

Emma had a biological sister.

And nobody had told me.

Not Vanessa.

Not Rachel.

Nobody.

When we returned to Jason’s house, I sat with Emma.

I didn’t know how to explain everything.

How do you tell a five-year-old that the family story she knew was incomplete?

How do you explain adults created secrets that hurt children?

I simply held her hand.

“Emma.””

“Yes, Daddy?””

“There’s something I want you to know.””

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I answered immediately.

“Never.””

She smiled slightly.

Then I told her she had a sister.

Her eyes widened.

“A sister?””

“Yes.””

“Does she like unicorns?””

I almost laughed through my tears.

“I don’t know.””

“Can I meet her?””

I looked at her.

And realized something.

After everything.

After all the betrayal.

My daughter still had kindness inside her.

That was something Michael could never understand.

That night, Vanessa finally told me the complete truth.

She had known about Lily.

She had hidden the adoption details because she feared losing Emma.

But she never knew Michael would use the children against us.

I listened.

But I also understood something.

Trust wasn’t destroyed in one moment.

It was broken piece by piece.

And rebuilding it would take time.

The next morning, police found Michael’s location.

He wasn’t running.

He was waiting.

At the place where everything started.

The hospital where Emma was born.

Before I left, I received one final message from him.

*Come alone.*

*You deserve to know why I did everything.*

Then a second message appeared.

A photograph.

It showed Michael standing outside the hospital.

Holding a document.

The document had my name on it.

May you like

And underneath it was one sentence:

*The truth about Emma’s birth will destroy everything you believe.*
