Chapter 6: The Night Nobody Told Me About

I didn’t sleep.

Not even for a minute.

The message stayed open on my phone all night.

*Check the security footage from the night Emma disappeared for three hours.*

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emma sitting beside the dog tray.

I saw her afraid.

I saw the way she looked at Vanessa before answering simple questions.

A child doesn’t become scared of telling the truth overnight.

Someone teaches them fear.

At seven in the morning, I drove back to the house.

Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

Like she hadn’t slept either.

Good.

For once, I wanted her to feel uncomfortable.

“Where’s Emma?””

“She’s with Jason.””

I placed my phone on the table.

“What happened the night she disappeared?””

Vanessa froze.

I watched every tiny change in her face.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The calculation.

“What are you talking about?””

I leaned forward.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

Her eyes dropped.

“Who told you?””

That was all I needed.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Confirmation.

“You knew.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

She was silent for a long time.

Then she whispered:

“She followed Michael.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Three months ago, Michael came over.””

“Why?””

“He said he needed to talk about business.””

“And?””

“And Emma heard us arguing.””

My heart tightened.

“What were you arguing about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“About you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

She ignored the comment.

“Emma thought Michael was hurting me.””

“She was five.””

“I know.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“She tried to help me.””

I stared at her.

“What happened?””

“She followed him outside.””

“And nobody told me?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because Michael came back with her.””

My body went still.

“He brought her back?””

“Yes.””

“Where was she?””

“In his car.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“My daughter was in Michael’s car?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I was scared.””

I slammed my hand onto the table.

“You were scared?””

My voice echoed through the kitchen.

“You let another man take our daughter somewhere and you didn’t tell me?””

“He said he would make sure nothing happened.””

I stared at her.

“You trusted him?””

“No.””

She looked up.

“I was afraid of him.””

That sentence changed everything.

I studied her face.

For months, I thought Vanessa was the monster.

Maybe she was.

But monsters could still be afraid.

“What did Michael threaten you with?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, he’ll destroy us.””

I leaned closer.

“He already tried.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Her hands trembled.

“Michael knows something about my past.””

I waited.

But she didn’t continue.

“What past?””

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

We both turned.

Jason walked in.

His face was pale.

“Daniel.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“It’s Emma.””

My heart dropped.

“What about Emma?””

Jason swallowed.

“She woke up crying.””

I rushed toward him.

“What did she say?””

Jason looked at Vanessa.

“She said she remembered what happened that night.””

The kitchen went silent.

“What did she remember?””

Jason hesitated.

Then he said:

“She said Michael wasn’t alone.””

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

“Who was with him?””

Jason pulled out his phone.

On the screen was a photo.

A blurry security image.

A woman standing beside Michael’s car.

I stared at the picture.

Because I recognized her immediately.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had hugged Emma.

Someone who had called herself family.

Jason looked at me.

“Daniel…”

May you like

My hands went cold.

Because standing beside Michael that night was my own sister.
