Chapter 7: The Person I Never Suspected
I stared at the photograph until the pixels blurred.
My sister.
Rachel.
The person who had been there when Emma was born.
The person who had cried harder than anyone when I brought my daughter home from the hospital.
The person who had always said, “Emma is my little princess.””
I looked at Jason.
“Where did you get this?””
He swallowed.
“Emma’s old tablet.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She recorded things.””
My heart sank.
“Why would she record things?””
Jason looked away.
“Because she was scared.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
My daughter wasn’t just afraid.
She had been trying to protect herself.
I took the tablet from his hand.
The screen was cracked.
The case had stickers Emma had put on herself.
A unicorn.
A rainbow.
Her name written in pink marker.
Such an innocent thing.
But inside it was evidence of everything she had been too afraid to say.
I unlocked it.
There were dozens of videos.
Most were normal.
Emma singing.
Emma drawing.
Emma showing her toys to the camera.
Then I saw one file with a strange name.
*DON’T SHOW MOMMY.*
My stomach twisted.
I pressed play.
The video was dark.
The camera was pointed toward the hallway.
Emma’s small voice whispered.
“Daddy said cameras help people know the truth.””
I covered my mouth.
She had remembered something I told her.
Months ago, after a neighborhood break-in, I installed cameras around the house and explained to her why safety mattered.
But I had never installed one in the pantry.
The video continued.
“I found the little camera.””
A small shadow moved across the screen.
Emma was hiding.
Then I heard voices.
Rachel.
And Michael.
Rachel’s voice was clear.
“Are you sure this will work?””
Michael replied:
“Daniel trusts you.””
My hands tightened around the tablet.
Rachel answered:
“That’s why I can help.””
I stopped breathing.
Jason looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I couldn’t speak.
The video continued.
Michael laughed quietly.
“Once the transfer is complete, Daniel will have nothing.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“And Emma?””
There was a pause.
A long pause.
Then Michael said:
“She won’t remember anything.””
I stopped the video.
No.
I couldn’t hear anymore.
I stood up so quickly the chair fell backward.
Jason grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I pulled away.
“My sister helped them.””
My voice cracked.
“My sister helped them hurt my daughter.””
Vanessa was standing near the doorway.
She had heard everything.
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
She just looked broken.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“About Rachel? No.””
I studied her.
“You knew about Michael.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“You knew he was planning something.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me come home thinking everything was normal.””
She covered her mouth.
“I was afraid.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Her voice became desperate.
“Daniel, you don’t know what Michael is capable of.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re right.””
I pointed at the tablet.
“But I know what you were capable of.””
Silence.
A painful silence.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Daniel.””
I knew that voice.
Rachel.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere Michael can’t hear me.””
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Because I’m the reason Emma is still alive.””
The room went silent.
My anger disappeared.
Replaced by fear.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“Michael didn’t tell you everything.””
“Then tell me.””
“I tried to stop him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“After helping him?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I helped him because I thought I could control what he was doing.””
I closed my eyes.
“That makes no sense.””
“Daniel, listen to me.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Michael wasn’t after your company.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he after?””
A long silence followed.

Then Rachel said:
“He was after Emma.””
