Chapter 13: The Hospital Record
I drove to the hospital with one thought repeating in my head.
*What else could possibly be hidden from me?*
For years, I thought I knew my family.
I thought I knew my wife.
I thought I knew the story of how Emma came into my life.
But every truth I uncovered revealed another lie underneath.
The hospital looked exactly the same.
The same white walls.
The same quiet hallways.
The same entrance where I had carried Emma out five years earlier.
Except now I wasn’t walking in with joy.
I was walking in looking for answers.
The police followed from a distance.
Michael wanted me alone.
I wasn’t stupid enough to give him that.
Inside the old maternity wing, I saw him.
Standing near the window.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
Michael turned when he heard my footsteps.
“Daniel.””
I stared at him.
“Where is the document?””
He smiled sadly.
“You don’t even want to know why.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I want to know why you destroyed my family.””
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“You still think I’m the villain.””
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“I protected her.””
My jaw tightened.
“Don’t say that.””
“I did what nobody else would.””
“You scared a child.””
He looked away.
“I never wanted Emma to be afraid.””
“Then why did you make her?””
Silence.
Then he reached into his jacket.
The police officers behind me moved slightly.
Michael noticed.
“I’m not reaching for a weapon.””
He pulled out a folder.
And placed it on a nearby table.
“This is the truth.””
I opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Adoption papers.
Birth documents.
My eyes moved across the pages.
Then stopped.
The name.
The mother.
The dates.
Everything started making sense.
Emma and Lily.
The same mother.
The same beginning.
But then I saw something else.
Something that made my hands shake.
A signature.
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
“What is this?””
Michael looked at me.
“The document that made you Emma’s father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“When Vanessa adopted Emma, there was a legal issue.””
I looked through the papers.
“What issue?””
“Your name wasn’t supposed to be on the original paperwork.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
Michael took a breath.
“Because Vanessa’s sister didn’t give up both children willingly.””
The hallway felt colder.
“What are you saying?””
He looked at the floor.
“Lily was taken from her.””
I froze.
“By who?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“Vanessa.””
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
“She thought she was saving Emma.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Vanessa believed her sister couldn’t raise either child.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
Michael looked at me.
“Am I?””
He pushed another paper toward me.
A court complaint.
A report.
A statement.
I read the words.
Vanessa had been accused of interfering with the adoption process.
The case disappeared.
Closed.
Hidden.
“How?””
Michael gave a bitter smile.
“People with money can make problems disappear.””
I looked at him.
“And you?””
He laughed quietly.
“I found out years later.””
My anger returned.
“So you decided to destroy everyone?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I decided to fix what was wrong.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t fix things by hurting children.””
His face fell.
Maybe for a second, he understood.
Maybe.
Then his expression hardened again.
“Daniel, you don’t know what Vanessa did.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“But I know what you did.””
The police moved forward.
Michael didn’t run.
He just stood there.
Almost like he wanted to be caught.
Before they took him away, he looked at me.
“One more thing.””
I didn’t answer.
He continued:
“Ask Vanessa why she never told you Emma’s real father was still alive.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
But Michael was already being escorted away.
I stood there frozen.
Because one impossible question remained.
