Chapter 3: The Person Behind the Camera

I stared at the file name.

My first thought was that Vanessa had created it.

My second thought was worse.

Someone had been watching us.

Right now.

“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered, “close that.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what’s on it.””

“That’s exactly why I’m opening it.””

I clicked.

The video began.

For several seconds, it showed nothing but darkness.

Then a voice spoke.

A man’s voice.

“Vanessa, you need to listen carefully.””

My wife’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

I turned toward her.

“You know this voice?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

The video continued.

“You told me Daniel would never find out.””

My chest tightened.

The screen showed a different angle.

Not the pantry camera.

Another camera.

A living room.

Vanessa was sitting on the couch.

And across from her was a man I had never seen before.

My wife looked terrified.

“I told you to stop contacting me,” Vanessa said in the video.

The man laughed.

“You don’t get to walk away after everything you promised.””

I paused.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, this isn’t what it looks like.””

I looked at her.

“Then what is it?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I pressed play again.

The man leaned closer to Vanessa.

“You said your husband had money. You said after the divorce, you’d have enough to start over.””

My entire body went cold.

Divorce.

Money.

Start over.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never said I wanted to hurt Emma.””

The man smiled.

“That wasn’t the plan.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does he mean?””

She started crying.

“I can explain.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I understand perfectly.””

Emma appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I immediately turned.

I didn’t want her hearing this.

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, go back to your room.””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

That question destroyed me.

Because my daughter wasn’t asking if Vanessa was in trouble.

She was asking if she was allowed to feel hurt.

I knelt down.

“None of this is your fault.””

Emma looked behind me.

“She’s going away, isn’t she?””

I froze.

“How long have you known something was wrong?””

She shrugged.

“Mommy said if I told you things, you would leave us.””

My stomach dropped.

“What things?””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said you only loved me because I was your little girl.””

I felt my hands shake.

Vanessa stood behind me.

“Emma, that’s not what I said.””

But Emma backed away.

“Yes it is.””

The little girl who had been afraid to speak in the kitchen was finally telling the truth.

“She said Daddy would choose his job over us.””

I slowly stood.

“Vanessa.””

She wiped her face.

“Daniel, I was angry. I didn’t mean—”

“Angry enough to punish a child?””

Silence.

The next morning, I took Emma to my brother’s house while I contacted a lawyer.

I thought leaving Vanessa alone would give her time to tell me the truth.

I was wrong.

That afternoon, I returned home and found the front door open.

Inside, drawers had been pulled out.

Papers were scattered across the floor.

The hidden camera was gone.

The laptop was gone.

And sitting on the kitchen counter was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Emma.

Taken from the same hidden camera.

On the back, someone had written six words:

*“Ask your daughter who she saw.””*

I stared at the picture.

Because underneath the message was another detail.

A name.

May you like

A name I recognized.

A name that made me realize Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something in my house.
