Chapter 9: The Secret After I Woke Up

The drive back to Rachel’s house was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

The kind of silence where everyone was afraid to say the wrong thing.

Daniel followed behind us.

Detective Harris had arranged for him to meet us at the station instead of staying alone.

Because now we knew something.

Michael was watching.

And he was always one step ahead.

When we arrived, Detective Harris was waiting.

He looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Bennett, you need to explain the hospital situation.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

We sat in the conference room.

Jayla sat beside me.

Her hand was wrapped around mine.

I held on tightly.

Detective Harris placed the hospital photograph on the table.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I went to your house because Jayla called me.””

I turned.

“Jayla?””

She looked down.

“I called him once.””

“When?””

“The night before you collapsed.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because I was scared.””

Daniel continued.

“She told me Michael was acting strange.””

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

“I went there.””

“And?””

“I confronted him.””

“About what?””

Daniel looked at Jayla.

“About how he was treating her.””

The room was silent.

“He admitted he was trying to control the situation.””

My hands tightened.

“Then what happened?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“He told me you would never believe us.””

“Us?””

“Me and Jayla.””

I felt sick.

Because Michael had been isolating everyone.

Making each person think they were alone.

Daniel continued.

“He said you were loyal to him. That you would choose him over anyone.””

My eyes filled with tears.

Because that was the person I had been.

I had defended him.

I had trusted him.

I had ignored signs.

“What happened next?””

Daniel looked down.

“You came home early.””

I frowned.

“I wasn’t supposed to be home.””

“I know.””

That night came back to me.

The hospital.

The confusion.

The missing hours.

“I remember walking into the kitchen.””

Daniel nodded.

“You saw us arguing.””

“Then?””

“Michael panicked.””

My heart raced.

“What did he do?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He told you everything was fine.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“He was calm.””

“Because he knew how to be.””

I looked away.

Daniel continued.

“He had already started manipulating the story.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Did Michael push her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone paused.

“Then what happened?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“He didn’t need to.””

“What does that mean?””

“He had already put something in her drink.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

“My drink?””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw him.””

Jayla covered her mouth.

Detective Harris immediately asked:

“Why didn’t you report this?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I didn’t know if I was right.””

“You saw him do it.””

“I saw him put something in the glass.””

“Then why?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because Michael threatened me.””

“With what?””

“He said if I went to the police, he would tell you I was obsessed with you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He said he would make everyone believe I was trying to destroy your marriage.””

I remembered.

The fights.

The distance.

The times Michael casually mentioned Daniel being jealous.

He had been building the story for years.

I looked at Daniel.

“And the money?””

He nodded.

“I took it.””

“Why?””

“To get proof.””

“Twenty thousand dollars?””

“I returned most of it.””

“Most?””

Daniel looked down.

“I used some to hire someone to recover deleted files.””

Detective Harris wrote something down.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

A message.

From Michael.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a video.

My fingers shook as I pressed play.

The screen showed my kitchen.

My kitchen.

The night I collapsed.

The camera angle was from inside the house.

I watched myself enter the room.

I watched Michael turn around.

I watched Daniel standing there.

Then the video cut.

A timestamp appeared.

The recording had been edited.

But there was something else.

A voice.

Michael’s voice.

Whispering:

“After tonight, she’ll never trust him again.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the screen.

Then another voice played.

A voice I recognized.

My own.

Confused.

Afraid.

Asking:

“What did you put in my drink?””

The room went completely silent.

Because I had just heard something impossible.

A memory I never had.

A question I never remembered asking.

Then the video ended.

And beneath it, Michael sent one final message.

“You wanted the truth.””

My phone buzzed again.

“He’s the reason Jayla is pregnant.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was crying.

May you like

Because we all knew.

The next secret was the one Michael had been hiding from the beginning.
