Chapter 8: The Brother’s Confession
Daniel was already sitting in the corner when we arrived.
He looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Like he hadn’t slept in days.
When he saw me, he stood.
“Emily.””
I didn’t hug him.
I didn’t smile.
I just sat across from him.
“Tell me everything.””
His eyes moved to Jayla.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked away.
That hurt me.
Because my daughter used to run to him.
Now she couldn’t even look at him.
“You don’t get to apologize and walk away,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Start talking.””
He took a deep breath.
“Michael was never who you thought he was.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why did you hide it?””
His face fell.
“Because I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“You were scared?””
Daniel looked at Jayla.
“I was scared of what he would do.””
My anger rose.
“And what about what he did to her?””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice broke.
“You weren’t the one sitting beside her every night wondering why she stopped laughing.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know I failed her.””
Jayla finally spoke.
“Why did you help him?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn’t.””
“Then why did he pay you?””
His face changed.
He knew.
“I was waiting for that question.””
I felt cold.
“Answer it.””
Daniel folded his hands.
“Michael paid me because he wanted information.””
“About what?””
“About you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He wanted to know if you suspected anything.””
My chest tightened.
“For how long?””
“Months.””
“And you took his money?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
Jayla stood suddenly.
“I knew it.””
“Jayla—”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You were both lying.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You were getting paid.””
“I needed access to his accounts.””
“What?””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
“I was collecting evidence.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Michael knew I was suspicious.””
“How?””
“He found out I was looking into him.””
Daniel pushed the folder toward me.
Inside were bank records.
Messages.
Photos.
I looked through them.
Then I saw something that made my hands shake.
A transfer.
From Michael.
To a private investigator.
The description said:
“Bennett custody case preparation.””
My heart dropped.
“He was preparing a custody case?””
Daniel nodded.
“He planned to make you look unstable.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted full control over Jayla.””
Jayla whispered:
“Why me?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was terrifying.
Michael didn’t see her as a daughter.
He saw her as something he could control.
Daniel pulled out another document.
“This is the page that was missing.””
My breath caught.
The missing page.
The one Jayla thought was gone forever.
I grabbed it.
At the top was Jayla’s handwriting.
The page began:
“Michael told me Uncle Daniel helped him because Mommy would never choose me over her husband.””
I stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
I kept reading.
“Michael said Daniel knew everything and agreed that I was the problem.””
Jayla started crying.
“He said that?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“He was trying to make you hate me.””
“Why?””
“Because if we were fighting each other, nobody would believe either of us.””
That sentence hit me.
Because it was exactly what happened.
Michael had created a war.
And we had been too hurt to see the battlefield.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
My hands started trembling.
“Michael told me the baby would prove I ruined the family. He said Mommy would blame me.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Baby…”
She cried.
“I was afraid you would believe him.””
I moved toward her.
But before I could speak, Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He slowly turned the phone around.
The caller ID said:
Michael.
Daniel declined the call.
Immediately, a text appeared.
One sentence.
“I know where you are.””
The blood drained from Daniel’s face.
“How?””
Another message came through.
“I know everything you’re showing her.””
I looked around the coffee shop.
Every stranger suddenly felt like a threat.
Then Michael sent one final message.
“You should ask Daniel what happened after Emily woke up in the hospital.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked truly terrified.
