Chapter 12: The Lie That Protected a Monster

The message stayed on my screen.

“I was protecting you from what Jayla did.””

For a moment, I felt something I hated.

Doubt.

Not because I believed Michael.

Because he had spent years training me to question my own instincts.

That was his greatest weapon.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Confusion.

Jayla saw my face.

“Mommy?””

I quickly locked my phone.

“It’s okay.””

She shook her head.

“No, it’s not.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You think he’s telling the truth.””

My heart broke.

“No.””

But she knew.

She could see it.

“I understand.””

“Jayla—”

“You’re wondering if I did something.””

I grabbed her hand.

“Never.””

But she pulled away slightly.

Not because she didn’t love me.

Because she was tired.

Tired of being questioned.

Tired of defending herself.

“I’ve been wondering the same thing.””

That sentence destroyed me.

“What?””

She looked at the table.

“Sometimes I think maybe I’m the problem.””

I moved closer.

“No.””

“Michael said I was.””

“He lied.””

“But what if…”

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“You listen to me. You are my daughter. You are not a problem to solve.””

She started crying.

“I wanted to believe that.””

I hugged her.

And for the first time in days, she let me.

Later that night, Detective Harris received the final hospital footage.

The original.

No edits.

No missing pieces.

We watched it together.

The video showed the hospital hallway.

Michael walking beside my bed.

Daniel following behind.

Then another person appeared.

Andrew.

My breath caught.

“What is he doing there?””

Detective Harris paused the video.

“Look closely.””

The camera zoomed.

Andrew wasn’t approaching my bed.

He was arguing with Michael.

Even without sound, it was obvious.

Then Michael turned.

And pointed toward Jayla.

I felt cold.

“He was threatening him.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“He wasn’t threatening Andrew.””

“Then what?””

Daniel whispered:

“He was warning him.””

Detective Harris looked confused.

“About what?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Then the audio from the footage was enhanced.

A faint conversation played.

Michael’s voice:

“You stay away from her.””

Andrew:

“She’s my daughter.””

Michael:

“Not anymore.””

The room went silent.

Then Andrew said something that made my blood run cold.

“You don’t get to erase what happened.””

Michael answered:

“You have no idea what she remembers.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Jayla.

“What does he mean?””

She was crying.

“I don’t know.””

But then she suddenly froze.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She stood slowly.

“There was something.””

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“When I was younger.””

My heart raced.

“About what?””

“Before Michael.””

She swallowed.

“I remember a man yelling.””

Andrew went pale.

“Where?””

“At our old house.””

The room became silent.

Jayla continued.

“I remember Mommy crying.””

I felt dizzy.

“I don’t remember that.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“That’s why I thought it was a dream.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Jayla, what else?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then her face changed.

A memory returning.

“But I remember one thing.””

“What?””

“Michael was there.””

Nobody breathed.

“Michael was there before he married Mommy.””

My mind raced.

That was impossible.

Michael had told me he met me years after my divorce.

He said he had never known Andrew.

He said he had no connection to my past.

But Jayla was remembering something else.

My phone rang.

This time, it was Andrew.

I answered immediately.

“Emily.””

His voice was urgent.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A file Michael kept.””

My heart pounded.

“Where?””

“His old computer.””

“How did you get it?””

“Because Daniel was right.””

I looked at my brother.

“About what?””

Andrew’s voice lowered.

“Michael didn’t enter your life six years ago.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

“He knew you before.””

I couldn’t speak.

Then Andrew said:

“He was watching your family before you ever met him.””

The call ended.

And seconds later, Detective Harris received an alert.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“We found Michael’s abandoned storage unit.””

My heart raced.

“What’s inside?””

He stared at the screen.

“Photos.””

“How many?””

His face turned serious.

“Hundreds.””

I felt sick.

“Of what?””

Detective Harris looked at Jayla.

Then at me.

“Your family.””

May you like

And then he added:

“Some of them were taken years before Michael ever met you.””
